Dan graduated from Highline High School in 1965, also in Burien. Later that year, he attended Mt. Vernon Community College.

In 1966 he and his two best friends decided to tour the U.S. in a VW Beetle. They worked short-term jobs throughout the country to support their travels. The trip had a large impact on Dan and he spoke about it fondly and often.

In 1967 Dan returned to Burien and worked at House of Values where a year later he met the love of his life, Jerene Sutterlin, who he married in 1969. House of Values merged with PayLess Drug, and Dan and his family lived in several places while he grew with the company, including Kent, WA; Longview, WA, where daughter Sarah was born; Manteca, CA, where daughter Mary was born; Walla Walla, WA; and eventually settling in Lewiston as Store Manager in 1986. In total Dan had over 35 years of service with the company (PayLess was eventually acquired by Rite Aid) and received many accolades and awards for his management and customer service during that time. The last 6 years of his working career, Dan worked for United Rentals in Lewiston retiring in 2009. In his retirement Dan was a crossing guard for the Lewiston School District.

Dan loved being outdoors, and throughout his life he had a variety of hobbies, including fishing, camping, 4-wheeling, golfing and sitting by his pool. He enjoyed reading non-fiction and poetry, attending Vandal football games, road trips with Jerene, traveling to see his daughters and hanging out with friends and family.

Dan took pleasure in volunteering in the community and was involved in a variety of groups in the various places he lived, including the Eagles, Valley Boys and Girls Club, DECA, Rotary, Clarkston Country Club, Moose, Lewis-Clark ATV and Elks, among others.

Dan is preceded in death by his parents. Dan is survived by his wife of 48 years, Jerene Hester of Lewiston; his daughters, Sarah Hester (Matt Yackell) of Camas, WA and Mary (Charles) Stegner of McCall, ID; his brother, Dave (Nancy) Hester of Covington, WA; as well as two cousins, several brothers-and-sisters-in-law, many nieces and nephews and friends.

Paper

Highline Times

Thu, 28 Jun 2018 02:57:27 +0000 patr 53400 at https://www.westsideseattle.com Elva LaPlante https://www.westsideseattle.com/highline-times/2016/11/02/elva-laplante-1
Elva LaPlante
 kenr Wed, 11/02/2016 - 7:10pm

ELVA JEAN LaPLANTE

Elva Jean LaPlante, born June 11, 1923 in Reubens, Idaho, passed away on October 23, 2016, in Des Moines, Washington, outliving her brother, Louis Heuett, and her sister, Betty Johnson. She was Totem Theatre’s first treasurer, and secured federal non-profit status for the fledgling arts organization in 1982. Totem Theatre went on to become the thriving multi-arts organization now known as ArtsWest.
Born in Louisville, KY, Leslie was the daughter of C. Leslie Hill, an editor for the Associated Press, and Saida Stodghill. Her father died before she was born, so her mother raised Leslie with her Stodghill cousins —Wes, John and Bill—nearby. When Leslie earned her bachelor’s degree in Liberal Arts from the University of Louisville in 1941, her cousins considered her the most brilliant one of the bunch. Her uncle had different values and wouldn’t let her attend art school in New York as a post graduate on a full tuition scholarship. Even then, her passions were theatre and ballet and she saw much of both when the "Ballet Russe de Monte Carlo" and touring Broadway shows came through town. Leslie and her mother eventually made their home in Missouri.
Leslie met her friend, Dorothy Hackenyos when they each worked for the Metropolitan YWCA of St. Louis—Dorothy as manager of the Y’s residential apartments, and Leslie as an accountant. Dorothy also sang jazz in a local club. Upon Leslie’s retirement in 1981, she and Dorothy pared down their belongings, traded their VW bug for a van and headed to Seattle with Leslie’s two African Grey parrots, Marcus and Nigel.
Once settled, they responded to a notice in the Herald to come to a meeting about a new community theatre forming in West Seattle. They offered the use of their phone as the information number for the new organization. They also ran the box office for the first two years.
When her partner Dorothy was diagnosed with metastatic cancer, Leslie nursed her at home with hospice help. Dorothy succumbed within two months in 1988.
Her parrot, Marcus, became even more of a companion to Leslie after Dorothy’s death. He was every bit as literate and sassy as she was, and jealous of anyone he considered an interloper.
Leslie once told an interviewer that she didn’t come to Seattle “to be a wart on the sidewalk.” She wanted to make a difference in her adopted community. And well she did, volunteering countless hours for the Seattle Audubon Society; also for Totem Theatre, New City Theatre, Intiman, and Seattle Children’s Theatre.
She loved to go, bombing around the Puget Sound area in her little yellow Subaru Outback as well as elder-hosteling five times in Europe. She
stayed in touch with friends all across the country with little hand-lettered witty notes and phone calls. She was fun to spend time with as she had such varied interests. She was direct, her humor irreverent, and she could turn a phrase almost effortlessly.
The earthly vessel that was her increasingly painful body has now been reduced to ashes and placed with those of Dorothy at Forest Lawn Cemetery’s mausoleum as she wished. Family survivors are cousin Bill’s wife, Nancy Stodghill of Louisville, KY, and cousin John’s wife, Marsha Stodghill of San Diego, CA and their families.
A celebration of her life will be held Sunday, February 24, 2013, 1 p.m. at Merrill Gardens of West Seattle, 4611 35th Avenue SW. Please dress casually and prepare to enjoy sharing memories with her many friends.
For more information and to send memories please see her online guestbook at www.Howden-Kennedy.com.

Published in The West Seattle Herald February 22, 2013

Paper

Highline Times

Fri, 15 Feb 2013 22:41:43 +0000 sharah 3876 at https://www.westsideseattle.com June M. She grew up on a fairly primitive family farm with two brothers, 10 ½ and 14 years older. Her first eight years of education were spent in a one room country school. In high school JoAnn was elected as Prom Queen, Homecoming Queen, and in 1947 she was her county’s candidate for the Wisconsin Dairy Queen contest. In 1952 she earned a degree in Home Economics Education from the University of Wisconsin. Later that year she married John Bolender and relocated to the Pacific Northwest. She intended to teach but in the following years she focused on raising her children; Jean Ann, Steven John, Mark Josef, and Robert James.
Although she was busy raising a family, JoAnn still found time and energy to share her talents with the Des Moines Methodist Church, Ryther Child Center, the Diversified Divas, Water District 75, and Wesley Homes. Other activities included the Seattle Corvair Club and the Boeing RV Club. For a few years in the late 50s she fulfilled the role of a Naval Officer’s wife.
Through JoAnn’s last months, she maintained her upbeat attitude with the family, church, and neighbors in spite of the burden of her illness. She celebrated her 60th wedding anniversary in July 2012. Mary Emma was born in 1919 in Poplar Ridge, New York, to Margaret (Hardin) and Levinus Painter. She grew up in small communities in New York State and Vermont in which her father served Quaker congregations. She graduated from Northfield Seminary (high school) and Ohio Wesleyan College and did graduate studies in social work at Western Reserve University.
She married Gene Hibbard June 13, 1943. She embraced her role as minister’s wife by being a true partner with him in the churches and communities they served in Ohio, Manson and Summit (Tacoma), Washington, and Kellogg, Idaho. Her major accomplishment was raising their five children, encouraging creativity through craft projects, music and puppets and a love of nature through walks through woods and camping.
Later, she became very active in organizations that promoted peace and international understanding.
