One roadblock is that the Parks Department requires a person be deceased for three years before it considers naming a park after that person.

Exceptions have been made, and a petition is now circulating to request such an exception in St. Clair's case.

"We want to get several thousand signatures," said Pete Spalding, of the Delridge Neighborhood District Council, who has teamed up with Morgan Community Association’s Steve Sindiong, Chas Redmond, and Cindi Barker, to present the petition to area City Council member and Parks committee chair, Tom Rasmussen, who will then approach Parks Superintendent Tim Gallagher.

The Southwest District Council has also partnered with Spalding's district on this push.

"We want to pay honor to Tim St. Clair's legacy," added Spalding. "We realize the tremendous benefit his reporting brought to the city and his neighborhood."

The petition deadline in April 4.

Morgan Junction park is being developed on newly acquired property at the southwest corner of California Avenue Southwest and Southwest Eddy Street. The city parks department acquired a .2 acre property at 6140 California Ave. S.W. in 2006, for a new neighborhood park in the heart of the Morgan Junction urban village.

Funding is coming from the 2000 Pro Parks Levy and a matching grant from the King County Conservation Futures Tax.

The levy also provided the funding for planning, design, and construction of the park. The result of two public meetings developed a design for a piazza-like space with green edges, a U-shaped public gathering space with seating, a central lawn, and a prominent tree located at the southwest corner of the property.

The Parks department is also seeking a name for a new park in the Northgate Urban Center

The Park Naming Committee is comprised of one representative designated by the Board of Park Commissioners, one by the Chair of the City Council Parks and Seattle Center Committee, and one by the Parks Superintendent.

Criteria the committee considers in naming parks include: geographical location, historical or cultural significance, and natural or geological features.

A park may be named for a person no longer living (deceased a minimum of three years) who made a significant contribution to parks and/or recreation. The Park Naming Committee will consider all suggestions and make a recommendation to Parks Superintendent Tim Gallagher, who makes the final decision.

Suggestions need to be submitted in writing by Monday, April 6, 2009, and include an explanation of how the suggestion matches the naming criteria.

Send to Seattle Parks and Recreation, Park Naming Committee, 100 Dexter Ave. N, Seattle, WA 98109, or by e-mail to paula.hoff@seattle.gov.

To sign the petition, contact Pete Spalding at 4107 20th Ave. S.W., Seattle, WA 98106 or contact bayouwonder@msn.com or call 206.579.4373.

Steve Shay contributed to this report.

Related Links

Morgan park

Seattle Parks and Recreation

Morgan Junction

Tim St. Clair

West Seattle

Morgan Junction

Parks/Open Space/Trails

Robinson Papers

Thu, 26 Feb 2009 17:18:28 +0000 Guest 18663 at https://www.westsideseattle.com Fauntleroy Way to get 'road diet' https://www.westsideseattle.com/robinson-papers/2009/01/26/fauntleroy-way-get-road-diet
Fauntleroy Way to get 'road diet'
 Guest (not verified) Mon, 01/26/2009 - 12:00am

<b>Graphic courtesy of Seattle DOT</b>

The Seattle Department of Transportation announced today (Jan. 23) its decision to change Fauntleroy Way Southwest to one travel lane in each direction, including a center turn-lane and bike lanes, often called a "road diet."

Between California Avenue Southwest and Southwest Edmunds Street, Fauntleroy Way will be converted from two travel lanes in each direction to one lane in each direction, a center two-way left turn lane, a bicycle lane northbound and shared lane pavement markings, for motor vehicles and bicycles, traveling southbound.

"It's the right thing to do," said Aaron Goss, owner of Aaron's Bicycle just a block from Fauntleroy. "It's the flatest bike route through West Seattle and a lot of people already use it."

Marked crosswalks will be added at Southwest Brandon Street and 40th Avenue Southwest. Most on-street parking will remain with a few spaces replaced by bus zones.

The restriping has been designed to make Fauntleroy Way safer for both pedestrians and bicyclists by reducing vehicle speeds and collisions while still supporting the road's capacity, accoridng to the city, which cites national studies that have revealed that single-lanes in each direction calm traffic and create a safer environment for all road users.

Goss says the average driver goes much faster than Fauntleroy's 35 mile an hour speed limit. There are so many talented, skilled and knowledgeable people who live here, and we can do so much for and in the neighborhoods when people get involved in their local community organizations. Youth oriented, lending a helping hand, civic affairs, all of them do important things for the benefit of everyone. Volunteerism reached great highs under JFK, perhaps we'll see a return to that way of thinking in the coming year.

Dow Constantine

King County Councilmember

I hope that in 2009 West Seattleites will support our local businesses like never before so that they can survive and thrive in a down economy. One of the biggest changes of the past decade has been the renaissance in the Junction and our other business districts, which had fallen on hard times during the '70s, '80s and early '90s. That vibrancy benefits us all. Even in a recession we will shop, dine and socialize a bit. If we focus that spending on our neighborhood entrepreneurs, we should be able to see our local business community through to better times.

Mike Dady

North Delridge Neighborhood Council Co-Chair

I would suggest that everyone who drives to please obey the posted speed limits, stopping for pedestrians and no tailgating. Same goes for pedestrians and bicyclists, obey the laws. The public sphere of streets and sidewalks seems to be the defacto town square these days where everyone interacts and a little more civility in this arena would go along way towards West Seattle's quality of life and well being.

Aaron Goss

Owner and master mechanic at Aaron's Bicycle Repair

I would like to see fewer people driving cars and more people walking and bicycling. For those that are left on the road, I would like to see fewer confrontations and more cooperation. Just because someone does something illegal, does not give you the right to retaliate by yelling, honking, flipping the bird, throwing things, etc. With the effects of peak oil looming, we all need to conserve and be nice!

Matt Johnson

Skatepark Advisory Task Force

I would love to see the Delridge skate park project back on its feet after the resent economy woes. We're at a deficit for skate parks, but times are tough and we've got no resources to work with. What would be really cool is if locally we were able to fund and keep this project moving with our own community resources.

Matt Von

Owner of Easy Street Records

(In the Junction) We have accomplished a lot over the last few years. I'd like to see that we don't get metered parking. We've got to all work towards not having pay parking on California Avenue. It's made for a more vibrant shopping district.

Lora Lewis

Owner of Hotwire Coffee

What I've noticed in the past few months is more people that are rediscovering their local community. For the New Year what I'd like to see is a continuation of that trend, people being more aware of others in need, contributing to the food bank and doing more volunteer activities.

Randy Engstrom

Founding Director Youngstown Cultural Arts Center

I would like to see more connections between different neighborhoods. People that live in Delridge going to Alki, people living in the junction going to Delridge [...] There are a lot of different communities and I'd like to see them interact more.

Mark Wainwright

President Admiral Neighborhood Association

In Admiral we've got some interesting things going on with a bunch of neighborhood folks getting involved in a park project at California. Project manager Doug early and project supervisor Ray Elder go over blueprints of the small, yet-to-be-named park at Morgan Junction. They say the park should open in March.

Construction has officially begun to transform the empty one-fifth-acre lot just south of the Beverage Place at 6413 California Avenue Southwest into a piazza-like park. Once slated for a future monorail station, the site will have green spaces, a U-shaped gathering place with seating, and decorative lighting. The park construction is funded by the Pro Parks Levy.

"We've pulled all the wall, asphalt, and are now blowing out blacktop," said Ray Elder, project supervisor with Archer Construction in Kent, the firm awarded the job by Seattle Parks and Recreation. "We remove the gravel rock under the blacktop and will put in six inches of top soil for the planted area. We expect to have the concrete poured by the end of the week, and then it will really start taking shape. We should be out of here by March."

A public petition has been submitted to Parks superintendent Timothy Gallagher to name the piazza "Tim St. Clair Park" in honor of the long-time West Seattle Herald reporter who died Feb. 25 of cancer at age 57. He lived near the site. One snag is that the Parks department has a rule on its books that requires an individual be deceased for at least three years prior to consideration, but an exception is being discussed.

"The Superintendent has final say over making an exception," said Paula Hoff, a Parks strategic advisor on the Parks Naming Committee. "We're taking a look at it and might decide by February."

For more information please visit the website: http://www.cityofseattle.net/parks/proparks/projects/morgan.htm

Morgan Junction

Seattle Parks and Recreation

Pro Parks Levy

West Seattle

Robinson Papers

Mon, 22 Dec 2008 08:00:00 +0000 Guest 17863 at https://www.westsideseattle.com Catsino was amazing community event https://www.westsideseattle.com/robinson-papers/2008/12/17/catsino-was-amazing-community-event
Catsino was amazing community event
 admin Wed, 12/17/2008 - 12:00am

On November 1st, the Beveridge Place Pub was transformed into a homegrown,

Las Vegas style...Catsino! Local businesses, animal rescue groups and Furry Faces Foundation

came together to offer our community this entertaining, inexpensive event which allowed

people to have fun while supporting animals. From adopting gaming tables, to providing

fabulous raffle prices and everything in between, our generous business friends

and rescue groups made it happen.

And where would we be without our gaming guests--who were cheering, laughing and could not wipe the smiles off their faces? Plus, the next day at the Morgan Junction

Pet Adoption Stroll, 14 animals found new, loving homes. He had called 911 several times, saying that officers "had better get to me before I kill someone." He claimed to be holding several weapons, but none were found. He was taken to Harborview for an involuntary mental evaluation.

Friday morning around 7, a woman living in the 9400 block of 21st SW saw a man come in through an unlocked door. He shined a flashlight on her and claimed to be an officer looking for a robbery suspect. After he left, she discovered that her purse and credit cards were missing.

Beware of someone going door to door offering to fix minor damage on your vehicle. A woman paid such a man $400 cash, and he left the car in worse shape than he had found it. The suspect was a Hispanic male in his 30s or 40s, of medium build. He had broken and chipped teeth and wore a yellow jacket and red shoes.

A woman didn't want to wait in line at Target, so she cut in front of several other customers who, understandably, told her she needed to wait her turn. Later in the parking lot, the impatient customer confronted a fellow shopper, grabbing her by the hair and punching her in the forehead and nose. A witness called 911 and provided a detailed description of the suspect and her car.

Thirsty car prowlers broke into a vehicle on Avalon, shattering a window and prying apart a door frame, all for a couple of liters of diet Coke that were taken from the front seat.

A romantic triangle led to a bloody encounter in the Morgan Junction area on Saturday afternoon, when one man showed up at what he thought was his girlfriend?s house and repeatedly kicked another man who he discovered at the scene. The victim was advised by medics to go to an emergency room for treatment of a head injury. The suspect, who had fled the area, was later booked into King County Jail for investigation of assault.

Unknown persons stole a UPS delivery from the porch of a home in the 4100 block of 46th SW.

Thursday, around 8 p.m., three men walked into a Delridge convenience store, threatened the clerk with a shotgun and stole money and cigarettes. The same three are suspected in another robbery an hour later across the King County line.

A 13-year-old was booked into the Youth Service Center after he waved a knife around in a school locker room and then held it close to one student's throat. The suspect claims he was just trying to scare the other kids.

In Arbor Heights, a resident saw a red sedan pull up to her curbside mailbox. The passenger reached inside and removed all of the mail, looking through it as the car drove off. At another Arbor Heights address, a woman found a bag of mail just south of her driveway and turned it over to police. The contents belonged to residents of two homes along Marine View Drive.

Burglaries/break-ins/car prowls, by block: 5100 46th SW, 4400 45th SW, 9800 37th SW, 4000 Delridge Way, 5700 SW Winthrop, 2200 42nd SW, 4500 36th SW, 3900 40th SW, Avalon and Bradford SW (3), 3000 46th SW, 3200 44th SW, 1600 Harbor Ave. SW, 3000 California Ave. SW, 1900 Bonair SW, 6000 47th SW, 10200 44th SW, 3600 SW Webster, 4200 Chilberg SW, 1100 Alki Ave. SW, 6300 29th SW, 7300 7th SW

Alki

Arbor Heights

Delridge

Morgan Junction

Delridge

Parking

Robinson Papers

Mon, 15 Dec 2008 08:00:00 +0000 megan_sheppard 17813 at https://www.westsideseattle.com NEW Best of the West 2008 https://www.westsideseattle.com/robinson-papers/2008/12/09/new-best-west-2008
NEW Best of the West 2008
 admin Tue, 12/09/2008 - 12:00am

This year Americans will go to the polls to cast their votes for the most important offices in the land and in West Seattle we asked our readers to do the same. In past years, the West Seattle Herald's readers poll has been popular, but this year the response both online and in physical votes was overwhelming...IN THE THOUSANDS!

We figure everyone was fired up for Nov. 4 and wanted to practice their voting skills and in doing so gave us a true reflection of the faces and places that make West Seattle so amazing.

Congratulations to all the winners this year and thank you to everyone that voted and continues to support the West Seattle Herald and www.westseattleherald.com.

BEST RESTAURANT

JAK'S GRILL is our first back-to-back winner in this category and whether you're looking for a place with a great lunch menu or quiet spot to sweet talk your honey JAK'S is a can't miss. Great steaks (try the Prime Porterhouse!), seafood, chicken and salads are always prepared perfectly.

Alki's La Rustica and Admiral's Angelina's finished second and third proving that West Seattle loves Italian food too!

BEST HAMBURGER

Another back-to-back category winner is ELLIOTT BAY BREWERY for best burger. They have a great variety of burgers on the menu and the Herald's own Dick Sherman (ad salesman and brewery regular) has a theory on the reason for Elliott Bay's burger popularity: "the quality beef."

Alki's Pepperdock and the Luna Park Cafe also scored big with our readers.

BEST PIZZA

Although challenged by Junction newcomers, Talerico's and Garlic Jim's, Alki's PEGASUS PIZZA is still our favorite Pizza. Check out their new location. It's right next door to the old one!

BEST SANDWICH

If you haven't had a sandwich from HUSKY DELI raise your hand!! What? There's no one?

Elliott Bay Brewery and the prime rib sandwich from Metropolitan Market had plenty of votes heaped on too!

BEST FOOD UNDER $10

This hard fought contest was won by REDLINE MUSIC & SPORTS. Not only is it the Westside's official WSU Cougar bar, but they have a great (affordable) menu.

Luna Park Cafe and Taquaria Guamos in the Junction are great places to eat on a budget too.

BEST CLAM CHOWDER

Not even a fire and temporary closure could stop CHARLESTOWN STREET CAFE from winning best chowder for the umpteenth time. If you haven't had it yet, you don't know what you're missing. The stuff wins championships around the world!

Dukes and Spud also made a good showing.

BEST BAKERY

BAKERY NOUVEAU, BAKERY NOUVEAU, BAKERY NOUVEAU!

BEST BAR/PUB

ELLIOTT BAY BREWERY not only serves up great burgers, but the beer's pretty darn tasty too. Mix that with a fun atmosphere and you've got our favorite Bar/Pub. The Junction's West 5 and Matador and Morgan Junction's Beveridge Place Pub followed closely in the tallies.

BEST HAPPY HOUR

WEST 5 took home the gold medal for best happy hour and if you've ever enjoyed their food and spirits with your friends after work, we're sure you've been back.

Last years winner Matador, newcomer Ama Ama and the Redline are a lot of fun too!

BEST COCKTAIL

WEST 5 took home their second category this year with the win for best cocktail. A repeat from last year that must say something about the quality of the product! Like, it's awesome! Cactus and Matador mix em' up pretty good too!

BEST BARTENDER

Either LESLIE at REDLINE MUSIC & SPORTS has a lot of friends, she spends a lot of time online voting for herself or she's just an awesome bartender. You should go say hello!

BEST LIVE MUSIC VENUE

Last year's champ, SKYLARK LOUNGE on Delridge, pulled it out again. It's a perfect place to see Seattle's best bands. Sweet room. Great sound.

The Rocksport, Easystreet Records and Redline rounded out the category.

BEST COFFEE SHOP

This one came down to the wire and HOTWIRE COFFEE (next to the Junction post office) beat Luna Park's Java Bean by just three votes. That is freakin' close!! Hotwire not only serves up a great cup, but has wi-fi and great service with a smile.

BEST MASSAGE

HEAD TO TOE DAY SPA in the Admiral District took this relaxing first time category and newcomer the Junction's Body Bar received votes too.

BEST PLACE TO BRING A DATE

SALTY'S ON ALKI easily won the best place in West Seattle to bring a date. Great view, great food, cool vibe. And there's parking!

BEST HAIRCUT

For the first time in years we have a new winner. Luna Park's OLA is West Seattle’s Best Hair Cut. OLA is a really cool spot and the customer service is top notch!

They were followed by past winner Illusions and Fantastic Sams.

BEST FLORIST

In this category it's LINDA'S FLOWERS and everyone else. For the past decade Linda and her talented team have been brightening up days throughout West Seattle and winning this contest.

Bobo's Botanicals received a fair number of votes this year too!

BEST CUSTOMER SERVICE

West Seattle is filled with great people that are helpful and courteous, but the most helpful and courteous staff in the area this year was TRUE VALUE HARDWARE located in the Junction.

Hotwire Coffee and the Body bar also got your attention.

BEST NEW BUSINESS

Over 30 businesses received votes in this category but the clear winner this year is that wild little gift shop in the Admiral District MAX & QUINN'S ATOMIC BOYS.

Other receiving a plethora of votes were Zippy's Hamburgers and Shoofly Pie Company.

BEST THRIFT SHOP

FUNKY JANES is a West Seattle mainstay and our clear winner for Best Thrift Shop.

BEST BOUTIQUE

The Junction's CARMILIA'S is a terrific Ladies Boutique and is our new champion in that category. Clementine and Sweetie also got in on the act!

BEST GROCERY STORE

Next year there will be at least two more grocery stores for METROPOLITAN MARKET to compete with, but a champion is a champion until someone takes the title away and Metropolitan Market is still the title holder.

BEST PET CARE

Where do you take your ailing pet? Most of you said WEST SEATTLE ANIMAL HOSPITAL this year, followed by Lien Animal Clinic..

BEST AUTO REPAIR

Last year, in an amazing numerical oddity two shops tied for the Best Auto Repair and this year they both received the most votes again, but TOM'S AUTO REPAIR nosed to a victory over Alki Auto.

Barnecuts and Foreign Auto Repair came on strong.

Alki

Delridge

Admiral

Morgan Junction

Delridge

West Seattle

Parking

Business

Robinson Papers

Tue, 09 Dec 2008 08:00:00 +0000 admin 17774 at https://www.westsideseattle.com
