Thousands of zombies swarmed the streets of Fremont July 3 looking for victims, brains and a Guinness World Record.

The second-annual Red, White & Dead zombie walk was an attempt to reclaim the zombie walk record from England, who stole it after last summer's event. Seattle had 3,894 zombies last July, but England edged the city out with 4,026.

Zombie families, zombie dogs, zombie clowns and much more shuffled their way through the Center of the Universe, followed by the occasional zombie hunter.

Zombie-walker Becca Boehm said she and her family participated in the event to show their patriotism.

"It started off as the death of the financial system," said Chris Hammersley, who was dressed as zombie Uncle Sam. "And, you know, Uncle Sam – Fourth of July – zombies. It works."

Red, White & Dead was officially produced by Fremont Outdoor Movies. Stay tuned to see if the Fremont zombie apocalypse was overwhelming enough to reclaim the crown.

UPDATE: Fremont Outdoor Movies counted 4,920 zombies total at Red, White and Dead. So far, 4,233 have been verified, enough to take back the Guinness World Record from England.

Ryan Reiter, creative producer for Fremont Outdoor Movies, said they are hoping to have more zombies verified this week.

"It feels great," Reiter said. "Seattle's zombies showed up and represented the Emerald City and brought the record back to United States. Next stop, the world's first Zombie Convention this Halloween, ZomBcon 2010.

Thousands of Zombies prowl downtown Fremont, break world record

Like Father, like son. These two generations of zombies join the thousands of other blood-buddies that took over downtown Fremont July 3. According to event officials, they set a Guinness World Record for largest Zombie march ever. CLICK ONTO PHOTO FOR SLIDE SHOW.

Zombie-palooza hit downtown Fremont July 3 and broke a Guinness World Record. The event was coined "Red White & Dead" in honor of the Fourth of July.

Thousands gathered by the cinema lot at Fremont studios at North 35th Street and Phinney Avenue North. Some had ripped pants, torn T-shirts, "severed skin" and blood, blood, blood.

They lurked the streets - a three block route - and earned double takes from drivers passing by - some amused, others puzzled.

Organizers registered 5,000 zombies to earn the world record.

Registration began at 6 p.m., and hordes of zombies continued stumbling in well after 8 p.m. The dance steps to Michael Jackson's "Thriller" were taught at 8:30 p.m. as a tip of the hat to the late pop super-star.
