Oct. Denny/Sealth project update

The Seattle School District Building Excellence III capital program has just released its latest update on the Denny/Sealth campus project.

"As of the end of September, 2009, the new Chief Sealth boilers are complete and awaiting the final report. The installation of the sewer line and water on the north end of the project was completed.

"The old Chief Sealth courtyards have been demolished and the contractor began framing walls and completing mechanical, electrical and plumbing rough-in in Chief Sealth High School.

"The contractor is 80 percent complete with the installation of the footings for the new Galleria and Denny International Middle School and 75 percent complete with the underground utilities for the new Galleria.

"The contractor also began erecting walls for the new middle school gymnasium.

"This month, October, 2009, work will continue on the foundation and walls for the new Denny International Middle School. Deliveries of the structural steel for the new Denny International Middle School will continue and steel erection of the commons area will begin.

"The contractor will continue framing walls, and completing mechanical, electrical and plumbing rough-in in Chief Sealth High School. The site work will continue on the south and west sides of the project.

Kelsey Waldon, a Chief Sealth High School junior, is participating in a week-long motherhood project in her child development class.

"It's to teach us about the responsibilities of a parent, to think before you act," said Waldon.

"I don't even know if I want to have kids," she continued. "If I did it would be very, very far away."

Waldon said all her classmates, about 15, are toting "babies."

"His head is made out of newspaper, his body is a bag of flour," she said. "His name is Vladimir John Wayne. It just seemed like a really cool name."

Chief Sealth students return from educational trip to Guatemala

Eight students from Chief Sealth High School recently took an educational trip to Antigua, Guatemala to both help build and learn about community and leadership.

Another group of six high school students from Chief Sealth will be participating in the summer 2009 trip to Guatemala, which begins on June 24 and ends on July 8 this year. Both trips are sponsored by Global Visionaries, a group which states its mission to be to "educate and empower youth to become active community leaders and global citizens."

Chief Sealth High School is one of the eight schools that have been participating in year-long educational programs sponsored by Global Visionaries. These educational programs culminate with a two-week trip to Guatemala.

Michaela A. Milo, a student from Chief Sealth who participated in the program, which culminated with the spring 2009 trip said, “I’d say Global Visionaries is something to experience if you love meeting new and exciting people, because I know I have made so many new friendships and its hard to leave them behind in Guatemala.”

Another student from Chief Sealth and participant in the spring 2009 trip, Hannah Kay Vann, said, “Don’t take anything for granted.”

The eight Chief Sealth High School students who participated in the program: Cleressa Diana Brown, Allie Jean Bunch, Jacob Lee Cargel-Bley, Jacob Michael Kenney, Michaela Alesi Milo, Markia Stephaie Pernel, Kamariah Sinclaire Rockas Mitchell, and Hannah Kay Vann.

Chief Sealth students participating in the summer 2009 program include: Alana Akpojovwo, Leland Corley, Molly Freed, Daniel Ross, Meru Simone, and Kathryn Ushimaru.

These students learn about social and environmental justice; and work in three separate groups in Antigua, Guatemala helping in the construction of classroom buildings; the construction of a long-term care hospital facility; and working in the coffee fields. For a period of two weeks, they work at one of those tasks in the morning and learn Spanish in the afternoon.

By participating in the program, students can better understand the importance of youth initiative and the meaning of a global community, according to Global Visionaries.

Students from Garfield High School, Mercer Island High School, Roosevelt High School, Nathan Hale High School, Nova High School, Franklin High and Center High School also participated in the spring 2009 program.  

Global Visionaries offers a year long service and leadership program to high school students, which includes educating the students on issues relating to peace, justice and environment, fostering cross-cultural understanding, and supporting them in their fundraising activities. Everybody a winner in international soccer game

It seemed to prove a chore for spectators trying to keep their eye on the ball as it was swiftly kicked and head-butted on the Denny/Sealth Athletic Field Friday, May 8.

The audience witnessed the Chief Sealth's soccer team challenge the Secondary Bilingual Orientation Center, or SBOC team, in an exhibition called the Carne Asada Bowl, and yes, Mexican Mariachis and Mexican cuisine were featured.

The score was tied 4-4, but then SBOC scored the winning point in a shootout. Still, everyone seemed a winner at the cultural exhibition.

"I am the former principal of SBOC, a high school with immigrants and refugees who recently arrived to America," said Chief Sealth Principal John Boyd, who helped organize the game.

"Their team is called the Internationals with players from Iraq, Somalia, Ethiopia, and even a student from Mongolia. This is SBOC's only sports team."

The school is located in the "Old Hay" building, Queen Anne, but soon moves to the Meany (Middle School) building on Capitol Hill.

"SBOC's Principal Martin O'Callaghan took over when I left, and they just established the (soccer) team," said Boyd. "Delfino Munios and I brainstormed this thing with Martin and the soccer coaches."

While it was a friendly game, the competitive spirit was fierce. Said Boyd, "Many Chief Sealth team members came from BOC and so there is a great comradery out there."

Seattle Seahawk player to present award to Chief Sealth teacher today

This afternoon at the close of Chief Sealth High School's Cinco de Mayo assembly, a Seattle Seahawk player will be on hand to present Sealth teacher Nancy Ruyzcki with the presentation of the Symetra MVP award.

She was highlighted originally earlier in the year, and this recognition is to award her with the grant she is receiving for Sealth. This afternoon she will be presented with a complete set of laptop computers that will be for use by our students in a mobile-classroom setting.

ArtsWest annual student art show starts May 10

ArtsWest Gallery is gearing up for its Annual Student Exhibition and Competition, May 10 through 16. An artists’ reception and awards presentation will be held during 2nd Thursday ArtWalk, May 14 from 6 to 7:30 p.m.

All three West Seattle high schools - Chief Sealth, Seattle Lutheran and West Seattle High - are participating in this competition with a diverse range of two and three dimensional artworks completed in the 2008-2009 school year. Roughly 25 students from each school compete for monetary awards of up to $350. The awards ceremony will begin at 6:30 p.m. May 14 in the front gallery.

“This show is important to us as a way to encourage the continued creative thought and personal expression of the next generation of artists,” said ArtsWest Gallery Director Nichole DeMent. “Plus the students also gain valuable experience in the art world through showing at a professional gallery. I hope the community will join us for this fun event.”

Baseball teams from both West Seattle and Chief Sealth High School will be hosting special events during the next few weeks.

This Friday, April 24, Chief Sealth's team will be hosting a spaghetti dinner and auction at the school from 5:30 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. Each plate costs $12 and their will be both a live and silent auction. For more information please call the school at (206) 252-8550.

On Saturday, the West Seattle baseball team will play a non-conference game at Safeco Field against Newport Beach. The game is part of Safeco Field's High School Baseball Classic. The game will take place at 6:30 p.m. Admission is free.

The Alki Masonic Lodge #152 held its 31st Annual School Awards Program April 20 at the hall to honor outstanding high school juniors. Winners were flanked by Chief Sealth High School principal John Boyd, far left, and West Seattle High School principal Bruce Biven, far right. Twenty high school juniors, 10 each from Chief Sealth and West Seattle, were chosen as Alki Masonic Lodge's outstanding students.

A ceremony was held April 20 at the lodge to award the top male and female junior from each school for its 31st Annual School Awards Program. The Chief Sealth musicians jazz band also celebrated, playing the hit "Mambo No. 5" and other songs.

"The final four winners were chosen based on 12 catagories," explained Scott Wells, an Alki Mason and the event host. " It includes everything, not just their GPA. We look at their involvement in the community, where they are now, their future plans, involvemen in sports, and other areas of interest."

Imidiately following the awards each finalist stood up and introduced his or her family and friends who attended.

Event boosts interaction between youth, law enforcement (slideshow)

Denny Field hosted a competative, but not too vicious, flag football competition Saturday, April 18 to promote positive interaction between at-risk youth, and also interaction between the kids and law enforcement.

More than 100 players, including 98 boys, and two girls, participated in the joint King County Police Athletic League, or PAL, and City of Seattle Late Night Teen Recreation Program. Teams represented included the Southwest (Community Center) Team from Chief Sealth High School, South Park Community Center, Victory Outreach Church in White Center, Kent High School and teen members of the Tulalip and Muckelshoot tribes.

"I wanted to see first hand how many kids came to interact in a positive way," said King County Sheriff Sue Rahr. "These teens get to know cops better and kid around and have fun with them. (Officers coached and served food to the teens.) Kids had the chance to relate to the cops and watch cops react in a non-power position. They will have a better relationship with law enforcement down the road. Plus, we are always interested in recruitment."

"In addition to flag football, we offer soccer, basketball, and are considering adding a bowling league," said Carmen Martinez, recreation specialist for the Seattle Parks and Recreation Department.

"There are 700 chartered PAL programs countrywide," said Greg Harrison, a Normandy Park resident, and communications director for that organization. "It is funded by the King County Sheriff Office of Juvenile Justice, and these athletic activities are based on a gang intervention grant."

In the final match, Kent beat Joe Lopez's Victory Outreach team. The interaction, not the winning, was the lesson.

"It was a great running game, but that's not what was really important," said Harrison. "All the teams had a great day. It was a lot of fun out there."

Students recognized for excellence

The Alki Masonic Lodge #152 of West Seattle will recognize the outstanding junior class students from West Seattle and Chief Sealth high school with a program at the Alki Masonic Hall on Monday, April 20, 4736 40th Ave. S.W.

Alki Lodge and the two public high schools in West Seattle have encouraged excellence in education and participation in community activities for the students of the Junior Class by a ceremony of recognition for these qualities. This program has been recognizing outstanding students for thirty consecutive years.

Each year the faculties of the high schools select outstanding students to represent the junior class in this annual ceremony. The students are introduced, their abilities and activities are read and they receive awards as a recognition of their achievements.

This year students selected by the faculty are;

Rachel Cormac, Daniel Davis, Monick Keo, Paul Duncan, Megan Korling, Duran Jones, Leilani Sommers, Dominic Napat, Michelle Tran, and Jan Nichols from Chief Sealth High School.

Lisa Broadstone, Stephan Adams, Katelyn Elder, Caleb Fisher, Mariah Doll, Jabir Patel, Gina Phan, Diana Estrada-Alamo, and Biniam Woldehaimanot from West Seattle High School.

Pizza and beverages will be served downstairs at 6:30 p.m. and the ceremonies will begin upstairs at 7:15 p.m. Music will be presented by the Chief Sealth High School Band.

The public is invited and free parking is available.
