Women in Jazz Festival

What: The Seattle Women in Jazz Festival, the first festival of its kind locally, will highlight some of Seattle’s best jazz bands, led and/or comprised of women. It will be coming to Egan's Ballard Jam House on Friday and Saturday. Friday, saxophonist Cynthia Mullis and Syrinx Efect (Saxophonist Kate Olson and trombonist Naomi Siegel) will be playing.

The Hairy Ape

What: Ghost Light Theatricals’ production of Eugene O’Neill’s 1922 expressionist play, The Hairy Ape, combines abstract movement, choreographed stage violence, shadow work, and performance art to tell the story of a brutish, unthinking, middle-aged laborer known as Yank.

Three acts will battle onstage for a chance of being featured as a full production in Ghost Light Theatrical's upcoming season, and it will be the audience who decides the winner.

In Ghost Light's sixth annual Battle of the Bards three ensembles are given 20 minutes to perform a scene from a new adaptation of a classic work and to win over the audience.

The Battle of the Bards is the theater company's annual "fun"-draiser and the audience is given one vote with admission and additional vote scan be bought for $1. All proceeds will benefit the work of Ghost Light Theatricals' next season.

This year's competing acts are:

MACK THE KNIFE

Mack the Knife is a fast and loose musical adaptation of Macbeth set in a 1920's speakeasy complete with gangsters, molls, dolls, canaries, et al.

PAPER BULLETS

In Paper Bullets two media powerhouses tamper with the personal and professional affairs of four budding Hollywood icons. Scandalized sweethearts fumble with love and illusion in this modernization of Much Ado About Nothing, a farce replete with sex, glitter and deception

APOCALYPSE SOON
Written and directed by Courtney Meaker
Religious figures throughout a variety of texts and oral traditions come together for a three day reunion to plan the apocalypse and decide who's saved. Surfacing issues like hope, salvation, choice, whiskey, and acoustic music the characters try to resolve their angst before destroying the world.

Battle of the Brad will take place on January 27 and 28 at 8 p.m. at The Ballard Underground, 2220 NW Market St.

Tickets are $10 at Brown Paper Tickets or at the door.

The cast, crew, and audience will celebrate right after the Saturday performance with drinking, dancing, and voting. At midnight, Ghost Light will announce the winning show and the rest of our 2012-2013 season. A ticket to either performance of BARDS VI or a donation is admission into the party.

Ghost Light releases lineup for first full season in Ballard

Ghost Light Theatricals has chosen "Ch-Ch-Changes" as the theme for its 2010-2011 season, its eighth as a company but its first full season in The Ballard Underground at 2220 N.W. Market St.

While settling into their new home, adding a show to their season and shifting from nomads into Ballard's only theater company, the upcoming season represents a transformed Ghost Light still tackling the classics they love, according to a Ghost Light Theatricals press release.

The eighth season begins with William Shakespeare's classic tale of confusion, love, fantasy and transformation, "A Midsummer Night's Dream." Directed by R.A. Bergquist, "A Midsummer Night's Dream" runs from Nov. 5 through Nov. 21.

January starts with a bang as Wilder Nutting-Heath directs "Metamorphosis." A co-winner of 2010's "Battle of the Bards IV," this new adaptation of Franz Kafka's seminal work features humans and shadow puppets in a story about a man who turns into a bug and the changes that it brings with it. "Metamorphosis" runs Jan. 14 through Jan. 30.

Feb. 11 and Feb. 12 will be a weekend to remember as "Battle of the Bards V" hits the stage. Ghost Light's annual fundraiser pits three ensembles against each other, performing pieces from as many plays, with the winner getting a full production next season.

Beth Raas directs Caryl Churchill's "The Skriker" March 11 through March 27. The story of a fairy that befriends, manipulates, seduces and entraps two teenage mothers, "The Skriker" is a tale of love and revenge told through a world of horror and magical realism.

The 2010-2011 season draws to a close with the second co-winner of 2010's "Battle of the Bards IV." April 15 through May 1, Alexis Holzer shines a humorous light on society as she directs her own adaptation of "The Clouds" by Aristophanes – a comedic look at the upper class and our unwillingness to take responsibility for our own extravagant lifestyles.

New theater quietly moves into Ballard

With little fanfare or notice, a new theater company, Ghost Light Theatricals, has moved into the small space on Market Street formerly occupied by Live Girls! Theater.

Ghost Light Theatricals, a nonprofit organization founded in 2003, moved into the 64-seat theater in the lower level of 2200 N.W. Market St. in early January. On March 2, a notice for a liquor license was posted in the window.

The company moved into the Ballard location because they wanted to have their own space after being nomadic for the past seven years, said Matt Lyman, Ghost Light Theatricals' marketing director.

Artistic Director Beth Raas said the permanent home will give the company more opportunities than it had while it was moving around.

Live Girls! Theater vacated the space at the end of December when its lease was up and Ghost Light was able to take it over, Lyman said.

Lyman said the company is hoping to bring great theater to Ballard and its residents.

"It's important in a neighborhood that has as much nightlife as Ballard does to have a theater there," Raas said.

According to its Web site, Ghost Light Theatricals focuses on classical and classically-influenced plays.

Since 2003, the company has performed 23 plays in six different theaters in Seattle.

Ghost Light Theatricals will be putting on Anton Chekov's "The Three Sisters" April 2 to April 18.
