Joe Jacobson started on the mound and pitched 6 innings and gave up only 4 hits. Sophomore Alex Livengood came in to close the game in the 7th and earned the victory as the Beavers came from behind scoring 2 runs in the final inning. Senior second baseman Alex Stamey was awarded the player of the game honor for his defense and for going 2 for 2 at the plate with 1 RBI.

The Player of the Game goes to Senior two-sacker Alex Stamey, who continued his torrid return from a broken hamate bone with a 2-2, 1-RBI performance. Nice work, Alex!

Beavers complete sweep against Roosevelt, April 17

The Roosevelt Roughriders' losing streak continues and the seniors on this team can say they never lost to their cross-town rivals. Ballard took an early 2-0 lead in the first inning but it was player of the game, Ryan Kangas that put his stamp on the series by blasting a 3-run bomb over the right field fence in the 4th inning at Lower Woodland Park. Senior Carl Pearson started the game and pitched 4 strong innings. Seniors Dash Sklenar, Chris Kahn and Robbie Dunbar each came in for an inning for the 6-1 victory.

Player of the Game goes to senior third-sacker Ryan Kangas, who reached base all four plate appearances, going 3-3 with the game-breaking home run in the 4th, scoring 3 runs while knocking in 3. Congratulations, Ryan!

Beavers State Rankings!

The two polls for Washington State High School Baseball both have the Ballard High School Beavers ranked in the state's top tier of teams in 4A Baseball! Though the Washington State Baseball Poll has The Beavers ranked #8 as of April 21, the Internet-based MaxPreps.com has the Ballard Beavers ranked #4 in state. The Beavers are holding on to 2nd place in the Crown Division behind the leader Skyline. The Spartans are ranked ahead of Ballard by one spot in both polls, 7th and 3rd, respectively. The regular season will wrap up with 4 games remaining and its finale will take place at Skyline April 29th.

Follow Ballard News-Tribune on Facebook at www.facebook.com/ballardnewstrib

And Twitter at http://twitter.com/ballardnewstrib

Ballard High School

baseball

Beavers

High school sports

Seattle news

Ballard News Tribune

Mon, 22 Apr 2013 17:33:57 +0000 Guest 38195 at https://www.westsideseattle.com Baseball roundup: After week of ups and downs, Ballard maintains strong league standing https://www.westsideseattle.com/ballard-news-tribune/2013/04/04/baseball-roundup-after-week-ups-and-downs-ballard-maintains-strong
Baseball roundup: After week of ups and downs, Ballard maintains strong league standing
 Guest (not verified) Thu, 04/04/2013 - 8:05am

Our Ballard baseball boys have been staying on top of the league with two wins and two losses in the past week, making for 5-2 in the Kingco league. While they have been battling for the lead, they are now at No. 2 in the league, just one win shy of tying for first with No. 1 Skyline -- who, by the way, lost to Ballard.

Next, the Beavers will be facing the defending state champions Kentwood Conquerors this Saturday at 4 p.m. The Beavers and Kentwood will share the honor of playing this game at Safeco Field! In Wednesday's thriller at Whitman, Eastlake seemed on their way to ending the streak by scoring 2 runs in the 1st inning and holding the lead until the 5th. In the 5th inning, senior right fielder Stuart MacGeorge and sophomore Alex Livengood produced the game tying RBI's. In the 7th inning, with the bases loaded, senior catcher Frank Airey's 'walk-off walk' RBI ended the game. Senior Ryan Kangas earned player of the game honors by going 1 for 3 at the plate but also for closing the game and earning the victory by pitching 2 1/3 shut down innings.

Ballard vs. Woodinville, Monday, April 1

Last Monday, the Falcons' starting pitcher, Stephen White, held the Beavers to 3 hits in a defensive battle under the lights at Woodinville. The 3-1 loss dropped Ballard down to 2nd place in the KingCo Crown Division standings. Both White and Ballard senior Carl Pearson went the distance in the duel. The 3 base hits came from seniors Ryan Kangas, Stuart MacGeorge and Frank Airey. Airey's single to left field also produced the only Beaver RBI, scoring Ryan Kangas. The best defensive play of the game was when shortstop Ben Welch chased down a grounder and made a major league throw to first. Unfortunately, the field ump wasn't impressed and called the runner safe much to the surprise of the Beaver dug out and everyone else in attendance!

Ballard vs. Skyline, Friday, March 29

Defense, defense and more defense. On Friday, March 29th, the Ballard Beavers regained its lead in the KingCo 4A Crown Division by beating the Skyline Spartans of Sammamish 2 to 1. The combination of senior pitchers Joe 'Big Cat' Jacobson and Dash Sklenar won the pitcher duel over Drew Lunde of Skyline. Jacobson started the game and pitched 4 innings, gave up 5 hits, 1 run, walked 2 and struck out 3. Sklenar pitched 3 innings, 0 runs, walked 2 and struck out 2. Senior shortstop Ben Welch earned player of the game honors thanks to his plate performance and base stealing. Ben had 2 of the Beavers 4 base hits, 2 stolen bases, 1 run and 1 RBI. Jacob Westerman and Rory Graf-Brennen each accounted for 1 hit and senior catcher Frank Airey had Ballard's other RBI.

Ballard vs. Issaquah, Wednesday, March 27

If you were only looking at the statistics, you would be surprised that it was such a low scoring game but equally surprising was that Ballard's 12 hits produced only 2 runs. Issaquah, playing at home, handed the Beavers their first KingCo 4A Conference loss last Wednesday 3 to 2. Sophomore sensation Jacob Westerman led the offense again by going 3 for 3 at the plate and senior Stuart MacGeorge added another 2 of Ballard's 12 total base hits compared to Issaquah's 7. Defensively, another sophomore, Alex Livengood pitched 2 2/3 shutout innings and struck out 3 Eagles batters in relief of Ryan Kangas. The defensive play of the game has to be the catch by senior center fielder Rory Graf-Brennen. Early in the game, Graf-Brennen resembled Willie Mays when he robbed Issaquah's Michell Morimoto with an over the shoulder snag in deep center field.

Follow Ballard News-Tribune on Facebook at www.facebook.com/ballardnewstrib

And Twitter at http://twitter.com/ballardnewstrib

Ballard High School

basketball

High school sports

Seattle news

Ballard

Ballard News Tribune

Thu, 04 Apr 2013 15:05:40 +0000 Guest 37952 at https://www.westsideseattle.com Ballard High Sports Schedule 3/25-3/30 https://www.westsideseattle.com/ballard-news-tribune/2013/03/25/ballard-high-sports-schedule-325-330
Ballard High Sports Schedule 3/25-3/30
 Guest (not verified) Mon, 03/25/2013 - 11:23am

MONDAY, MAR 25, 2013

Baseball: JV Conf. Eventually, the Beavers were able to come back to narrow the lead, coming down to a reachable two-point difference in the 3rd quarter. But the Beavers were still unable to catch up to Garfield. Garfield broke away again in the 4th quarter. As the final seconds ticked down, Garfield kept scoring, leading to a loss for Ballard, 55-41.

Scoring Summary – Johnny Verduin, 12 points; Ray Owens, 11; Seth Berger, 7; Nate Rauda, 7; Nick Brown, 2; Stuart MacGeorge, 2.

The season is not yet over. Ballard turned on the Jets in the second period, scoring 18 points against a Vikings defense that seemed to be slowing down. It appeared Inglemoor would never come back with a first half score of 27-14.

However, the second half told a different story. After making adjustments and finding the motivation, Inglemoor grabbed the lead from the Beavers. It seemed as if the Vikings attack had figured out the defensive schemes that the Beavers used, sinking three pointers against double-man coverage.

Not to be outdone, Ballard kicked it into high gear in the 4th period, matching Inglemoor stride for stride. After long minutes of trading the lead the decision was made in the final seconds. Ballard would hold on to escape Inglemoor’s gym with a win, 55-52.

Scoring summary – Seth Berger 25 points, Ray Owens 11, Johnny Verduin 9, Nate Rauda 4, Darius George 3, Nick Brown 2, Chase Deger 1.

The next scheduled playoff game will be at Garfield on Friday February 8th. The Beavers made a strong case for that statement this past week by posting perfect 2-0 records for each the girls and boys basketball varsity squads, bringing a close to the regular season.

Tuesday, Jan. 29 Boys play host to Redmond for senior night

Ballard basketball held its annual senior night game in a game for both nostalgia and victory. Seniors Nate Rauda, Ray Owens, Will Leonard, Seth Berger, Stuart MacGeorge, Carl Pearson, Thomas Christensen, Kemal Deger and Johnny Verduin were honored Tuesday night in one of their final regular season games at the Beaver Dam.

The boys made a strong statement by winning the tip-off. The tip-off was then followed by a pull-up jumper from Seth Berger. Redmond (2-18) had no chance against the Beavers from then as the game was immediately controlled in the first half. At the end of the second period, the scoreboard read 37-24 Ballard. Redmond made adjustments and came back in the 3rd quarter with the intention of catching up to Ballard’s lead. However, their efforts were denied as fatigue caught up to Redmond. The boys continued to clobber the Mustangs, ending the game with a final score of 79-56, Ballard.

Scoring summary - Seth Berger, 25 points and 10 boards; Ray Owens, 21 points with 5 assists; Nick Brown, 8; Johnny Verduin, 7; Stuart MacGeorge, 6; Nate Rauda, 6; Carl Pearson, 4; Kemal Deger 2.

Wednesday, Jan. 30 Girls face Redmond at Home in Overtime Thriller

The day after the boys take care of Redmond, the girls were up next to take on the Mustangs at home. Redmond came fired up, pushing the Lady beavers to the very end. By halftime, the scoreboard didn’t yield who the better team was as the two teams kept it close, 26-25 Ballard. By the end of the fourth quarter, Redmond was coming out on top. With a little more than two minutes remaining in the game, the lady beavers were down by 5. Questionable calls from officials did not hamper the girls from coming back as they made a late push to tie the score up into overtime, 52-52.

In overtime, Redmond applied a press offense, but the ladies stuck to their defensive fundamentals and kept the Mustangs at three points during overtime. Imani Bender stopped key drives from Redmond that may have resulted in more points.

Final score 61-55, Ballard tops Redmond in overtime.

This victory secures the lady Beavers its first postseason debut since the 2008 state squad.

Scoring summary – Beverly Verduin, 21; Nancy MacGeorge, 20; Imani Bender, 7; Sam Hall, 6; Shelby Bailess, 4; Riley Soukup, 3.

Friday, Feb. 1, Final regular season home double header vs. cross-town foe Roosevelt

Having the day off from school, Beavers fans came out in full force to cheer on their teams in the last regular season home game.

Girls took the court first. To signify their team bond, they each drew hearts on their left wrist. Friday was their final regular season game at home.

After tip off, the girls took advantage of Roosevelt’s mistakes and came up with an early lead. Imani Bender never let up on her defensive tendencies, denying the roughriders shot after shot. Roosevelt only managed to come out with three points in the first period, only to be completely shut out in the second period, 9-0. The halftime scoreboard read 25-3, Roosevelt having no chance. In the second half, some of the star seniors were given a curtain call to let some underclassmen have their court time. The substitutions led to a few comeback points, but by then the game was out of reach for Roosevelt, as Ballard continued their strong push.

With a final score of 56-22, Lady Beavers win big.

Scoring summary - Beverly Verduin, 26 points (8 three point shots); Imani Bender, 12; Riley Soukup, 6; Nancy MacGeorge, 4; Shelby Bailess, 4; Sam Hall, 4.

Up next were the boys. All four quarters were a test of endurance for both teams as they kept it close. Every monster play the boys were able to come out with was answered with equal ferocity by Roosevelt. The rivalry fueled both teams in this match-up and by the end of the first half the scoreboard read 32-31, Roosevelt with a tight lead. Both teams never broke away until late in the fourth quarter. The Beavers took full advantage of rebounds and Roosevelt’s mistakes to move ahead. Ballard held onto the lead in the final seconds to conclude with a final score of 64-57, Ballard.

At the conclusion of the boys varsity game, the score was not as lopsided as the girls varsity final score, but it was every bit as electrifying. As the game continued to remain close, fans got more involved, making life difficult for the visiting Roughriders by adding Beaver Nation noise.

Christopher Duclos is the sports writer for BNT you can follow him on twitter @thechrisduclos

Notes:

Beverly Verduin was mentioned in the Seattle Times “Friday’s Top Basketball Performances”

Follow Ballard News-Tribune on Facebook at www.facebook.com/ballardnewstrib

And Twitter at http://twitter.com/ballardnewstrib

Ballard High School

High school sports

Seattle news

Christopher Duclos

Redmond

Roosevelt High School

Ballard

Ballard News Tribune

Mon, 04 Feb 2013 10:41:31 +0000 Guest 37147 at https://www.westsideseattle.com Ballard High sports schedule 1/29-2/2 https://www.westsideseattle.com/ballard-news-tribune/2013/01/29/ballard-high-sports-schedule-129-22
Ballard High sports schedule 1/29-2/2
 Guest (not verified) Tue, 01/29/2013 - 5:33pm

TUESDAY, JAN 29, 2013

Basketball: Boys JV Conf. To Ballard High varsity squads, the week was not easy, with both teams playing three total games. It was a test of endurance, especially with back to back evening games for both squads at the end of the week.

Tuesday, Jan. 22, Boys at Inglemoor

The boys brought their A-game to Kenmore on Tuesday night to take on the Inglemoor Vikings. A former basketball force to be reckoned with, Ballard had no trouble taking care of this particular Vikings team. Offense and defense, Ballard had complete control of all phases, outscoring Inglemoor by double digits in three out of the four quarters of the game. Inglemoor could not contain the Verduin-Berger duo, who each mustered double digits. Seth Berger led the evening in scoring with 20 and Johnny Verduin with 10.

Scoring summary – Seth Berger 20 points & 14 boards, Johnny Verduin 10 & 7, Nick Brown 9, Chase Deger 8, Ray Owens 6 & 5 assists, Nate Rauda 4, Will Leonard 2, Asher Clasen 2, Stuart MacGeorge 2, Kemal Deger 1, Carl Pearson 1.

Wednesday, Jan. 23, Girls host Inglemoor at BHS

Wednesday’s action featured the Lady Vikings of Inglemoor taking on the Lady beavers of Ballard. Ballard girls expected a fight against the Vikings as Inglemoor girls have been playing very well this season, ranking No. 8 in state.

Ballard took control in the first half, outscoring Inglemoor 25-21. However, the second half action was a whole different story. Though Ballard's Imani Bender frustrated the big girls for Inglemoor with a solid defense, Inglemoor eventually picked up the momentum and passed Ballard’s lead. Final Score: 57-50.

Scoring summary – Beverly Verduin 23 points, Nancy MacGeorge 11, Shelby Bailess 9, Imani Bender 3, Sam Hall 2, Riley Soukup 2.

Friday, Jan. 25, double header at Garfield

Ballard varsity teams loaded the bus and traveled to visit their cross-town rival Garfield on Friday night. It was a big night for both BHS squads: The lady beavers were looking to right the wrongs that caused them to get passed by Inglemoor while the boys were looking to finally take down powerhouse Garfield.

The girls tipped off first. The first quarter was a low scoring affair with a first period score of 6-2. The Garfield ladies had their efforts based solely upon containing guard Beverly Verduin. To Ballard’s advantage, this allowed for the rest of the team to step up. After the first quarter, the lady beavers kicked it into high gear. Garfield had no chance with the final score of 61-40, Ballard.

Scoring summary - Riley Soukup 14 points, Nancy MacGeorge 13, Beverly Verduin 8, Shelby Bailess 8, Sam Hall 6, Madison Asher 5, Imani Bender 5, Tessa Sechler 2.

Watch: Madison Asher denying Garfield shooter -- http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_za00DHLR3k&feature=youtu.be

The Garfield gym packed itself in a matter of minutes as the boys took the court to warm-up. Throughout the game, Ballard played with fire and confidence. In the first three quarters of regulation, the Boys kept pace with Garfield by keeping the score line within reach. However, endurance prevailed, and in the 4th quarter Garfield pulled away from Ballard. Final score: 61-50 Bulldogs.

Scoring summary – Seth Berger 13 points & 6 boards, Johnny Verduin 12 & 7 boards, Nick Brown 10, Nate Rauda 6, Ray Owens 6 & 5 assists, Stuart MacGeorge 3.

Saturday, Jan. 26, Red-out double header vs. Newport

It was another double header for the BHS boys/girls squads. This time it was not in a hostile away gym but rather within the comforts of BHS, the Beaver dam.

Still, back-to-back Friday/Saturday double headers proved to be a test of endurance for the BHS athletes, and Newport wanted to take advantage of it.

Girls started off the evening looking to keep momentum from last night’s victory against Garfield. But Newport was not about to let that happen. The lady beavers trailed early, getting outscored by the Knights 19-8 in the first half. The hopes of mounting a comeback at that point were long gone as the Beavers were only able to barely keep pace with Newport. Final score: 45-31, Knights.

Scoring summary – Nancy MacGeorge 11 points, Imani Bender 10, Shelby Bailess 4, Tessa Sechler 4, Beverly Veduin 2.

After seeing the girls’ defeat to the Knights, the Boys got their opportunity to strike back against Newport. Confidence and energy abounded. The boys were not about to suffer a loss again after the heartbreaker the night before at Garfield. After the first half it was all Ballard, outscoring the Newport boys 40-23. Newport was unable to keep pace with the Beavers from then on. Final score: Ballard wins big, 72-55.

Scoring summary – Ray Owens 19 points, Seth Berger 15, Johnny Verduin 14, Stuart MacGeorge 9, Nate Rauda 6, Nick Brown 6, Kemal Deger 3.

Both teams have two regular season games remaining on the schedule.
Tuesday, Jan. 29 – Ballard boys host Redmond at 7:30 p.m.
Wednesday, Jan. 30 – Ballard girls host Redmond at 7:30 p.m.
Friday, Feb. 1 – Ballard hosts double header against Roosevelt.
