Get ready, White Center! The Rat City Art Walk is back with a special Holiday Market on Thursday, December 18th and you’re invited!
Stroll through a festive edition of our Monthly Art Walk as White Center transforms into a vibrant holiday destination filled with local art, handmade crafts, vendors, and seasonal cheer. With both indoor and outdoor booths, it’s the perfect chance to find unique gifts and support local creators.

Why’s White Center Called Rat City?
It actually has nothing to do with actual rats!

Back during World War II, there was a military facility here called the Relocation and Training Center (RATC). Locals started calling it the “Rat Center” because of the acronym, and over time, it just stuck and turned into Rat City.

Now it’s part of the neighborhood’s identity- kind of gritty, a little rebellious, and full of character. You’ll spot “Rat City” in local business names, murals, and events like the Rat City Art Walk. It’s a fun nod to White Center’s unique history, strong community spirit, and of course, our beloved mascot.

Blowing Sands is the marriage of technology and art

David Smith is a technologist, engineer, storyteller and artist and owns Blowing Sands Glass Studio in Ballard.

David Smith didn’t start out to be an artist.

He’s a technologist and scientist after all, a graduate of MIT who fell into his now lifelong love of glass while studying for a degree in Materials Science and Engineering. But he took a class in ceramics (he’s been throwing pots since he was five years old), and then MIT changed the class, re-naming it. He could get credit for it, so he took it again. But down at the end of the hall they were doing something else. Blowing glass. “I’ve got to get into that,” he tolkd himself and soon found himself consumed with the magical material.

After graduating in 1982 he returned to Seattle and worked as a glass blower for four years. Then, in 1987 he embarked on a five year journey of self discovery and artistic exploration. He lived and worked with artists in Finland, Germany, France and Ireland. Returning in 1992 he opened his own hot shop and studio Blowing Sands & Laura Frost Fine Arts Gallery at 5805 14th NW. HIs work is an extension of his technical background in glass science and his love of the tradition and history of glass blowing throughout the world.

If you ask him, (and he’s not busy making art glass), he will share with you his deep background in glass art and debunk some of the misconceptions about the art, craft and history. He can explain that colors fixed in glass, unlike those in other mediums, such a paint or dye, do not shift or fade because the metal molecules such iron, manganese or chromium are held in stasis, and cannot “change valence states” which is a measure of its combining power with other atoms when it forms chemical compounds or molecules. Since they can’t move or combine in glass, the color stays the same for as long as the object exists.

The studio contains his prodigious output including vases, lamp covers, bowls, ornaments, floats, and much more including an entire gallery (the Laura Frost area) of pottery and paintings from many other artists.

The public is able to visit the hotshop and see the glass being blown and David is available for custom work and also offers instruction glass blowing with two types of instruction offered.

Paperweights and vases are only a fraction of the phenomenal volume of glass art at Blowing Sands.

The Abbagraphs, a Seattle ABBA tribute band will be the first band in the annual Summer Concert series at Providence Mt. St. Vincent Aug. 3.

Providence Mount St. Vincent is hosting four free summer concerts on Friday nights in August 2018. Guests can purchase food and beverages before the concerts and also enjoy free popcorn and snow cones. Attendees should bring their own lawn chairs or blankets since there will only be a limited number of chairs available. Dinner will be available from 5:30 to 7 p.m. Live music will play from 6 to 7:30 p.m. Concerts will be held on the patio of Providence Mount St. Vincent, 4831 35th Ave., SW, Seattle.

Aug. 3: The Abbagraphs - playing the pop hits of ABBA and the disco era.
Aug. 10: The Illusion of Elvis by Danny Vernon - The King is back by popular demand!

Twelfth Night Productions will be flying the “Freak Flag” in the Alaska Junction on August 5th between 10am and 10:30 am. Join us as the cast performs a short snippet from one of the most popular songs in our upcoming production of SHREK THE MUSICAL. The cast will perform 30 seconds of “Freak Flag” in the middle of the intersection during a few “all walk” cycles at the corner of Alaska and California on August 5th.

More about the show: “Once upon a time, there was a little ogre named Shrek….” and thus begins the tale of an unlikely hero who finds himself on a life-changing journey alongside a wisecracking donkey and a feisty princess who resists her rescue. Throw in a short-tempered bad guy, a cookie with an attitude and over a dozen other fairy tale misfits, and you’ve got the kind of mess that calls for a real hero. Luckily, there’s one on hand… and his name is Shrek.

“SHREK THE MUSICAL is sweet and busy, nice and big, and, every so often, extremely lovable," writes Newsday.

This production will be performed at West Seattle High School Theater, August 11, 12, 18 and 19 at 7:30 and August 13, 19 and 20 at 3:00. ART EXHIBIT – NORMANDY PARK CITY COUNCIL CHAMBERS

Nathan DiPietro - "Green on Grey Exhibit"

Open House Reception: Thursday, August 8th at 7:00pm

We are most fortunate to have Nathan DiPietro exhibiting at Normandy Park City Hall, as his unique egg tempera paintings exemplify aspects of
development which concern every community. This exhibition explores a newNorthwest where the lush overgrowth of the native landscape has been
replaced with neatly platted developments, leveled fields, and manmade greenbelts. In their regional focus and tight linear detail, DiPietro’s works are reminiscent of early 20th-century American painters such as Grant
Wood, but in contrast to those warmly nostalgic scenes from everyday life,
DiPietro’s images have the air of stage sets - uninhabited and artificial.

The exhibit will be on display in the Normandy Park City Council Chambers,801 SW 174th St, Normandy Park, through September 2013. The exhibit may also be viewed during city business hours, Monday-Thursday.

The City of Normandy Park Arts Commission invites you to join us at the

Nathan received his B.F.A. from Central Washington University in Ellensburg,in 2003. He has had solo exhibitions at Woodside/Braseth Gallery and Punch Gallery, Seattle, as well as at galleries in Ellensburg. I have had the pleasure of showing his works twice at the Lakeside Advisors gallery.

Nathan's work is currently included in the exhibition Creating the New
Northwest – Selections from the Herb and Lucy Pruzan Collection at the
Tacoma Art Museum, and he has participated in group shows at The Evergreen State College, Olympia; Western Oregon University, Monmouth; and Eastern Washington University, Cheney; as well as in galleries in Washington, Los Angeles, New York, North Carolina, and Texas.

Nathan recently was awarded a Pollock-Krasner Foundation grant, and received grants from 4Culture in 2010 and 2011. His work has been reviewed in Art in America, The Stranger, The Seattle Times, and on artsjournal.com, and can be found in the collections of Swedish Hospital and University of Washington Medical Center.

He is represented by Woodside/Braseth Gallery, Seattle.

Review: Stirring drama for a late summer evening presented in Burien

Along the idyllic beaches of Spain, where fantasy and reality are often indistinguishable, a long-needed reunion between a father and daughter from two different worlds opens deep wounds and unearths unspoken feelings.

“Beauty of the Father,” the newest joint production by Latino Theatre Projects and Burien Little Theatre is a fervently written character-driven drama by Cuban-American playwright Nilo Cruz (who also penned “Anna in the Tropics,” a production LTP and BLT produced last year).

The story centers around a young American student named Marina (Emily Feliciano) who visits Spain to be reunited with her estranged father, Emiliano (Fernando Luna, who delivers a touching performance), a painter who is an “artist” in every sense of the word.

As if Marina and Emiliano’s relationship were not thorny enough, Marina falls in love with Karim (Matt Aguayo), a young Moroccan man who lives with Emiliano and also shares a complicated relationship with him. Rounding out this family is Paquita (Heather Ward), a woman who is Emiliano’s companion but not necessarily his lover.

As one can tell, this is a very convoluted “family” structure happening here.

The play is told through the eyes of a dead Spanish poet named Federico Garcia Lorca (Santino Garcia, who adds a nice balance of mysteriousness and omnipotence to his performance), whose ghost mostly talks to Emiliano, but occasionally interacts with the other characters. Federico was murdered because the Franco regime found him and his poetry to be dangerous to the state, along with other reasons.

It is quite appropriate this story is told through the voice of a poet, whose passionate, wise-beyond-his-years perspective is desperately needed to sort out through this situation. Federico offers the audience a bird’s eye view of these people’s lives while occasionally throwing himself into the action.

Marina is smitten with Karim because he brings freshness, energy and vibrancy to life that she knows she lacks. But when she learns about a possible fling between this charismatic Moroccan boy and Emiliano, Marina begins to question whether she really knows her father at all. Meanwhile, Emiliano slowly discovers that he has a big heart, perhaps too big to allow so many people into it.

Director Michael D. Blum draws out very honest and loving performances from his actors in a story where there isn’t a whole lot of plot. Playwright Cruz gives us characters that are full of love, but probably love for the wrong people. And as Marina learns as she attempts to repair her damaged relationship with her father, sometimes it is the people who love us the most who hurt us the most.

This is a lesson that the presence of Karim doesn’t make any easier to learn.

The beautiful set designed by Maggie Larrick transports us out of the city of Burien and into Andalusia, a paradise where the colors seem brighter, the emotions run deeper and history permeates through every fiber of every individual. If you’re looking for a stirring and provocative drama to enjoy on a late summer evening, “Beauty of the Father” should be your glass of wine.

Annual event brings blues bands and microbrews to Des Moines Beach Park

Four of the Northwest’s top blues bands will play at the 4th Annual Poverty Bay Blues and Brews Festival on the shores of Puget Sound. The event features tastings from 11 local microbreweries, plus hard cider and wine.

The festival benefits Highline Music4Life, which provides musical instruments to low-income students in Highline Public Schools. The event is organized by the Rotary Club of Des Moines.

The Stacy Jones Band returns to the festival again this year. The musical line-up also includes Portland-based vocalist/bassist Lisa Mann, the Coyote Kings with Mush Morgan, and the Randy Oxford Band.

Beer, wine, and hard cider will be available for purchase by the glass in addition to tastings. To compliment your beverage, Rotarians will be grilling up bratwurst and B&E’s famous tri tip.

“Great music, food, and drink with a view of the sunset over the water! What better way to spend an afternoon?” said festival co-chair Lisa Meinecke. “Plus you are supporting music education in our local schools.”

The festival runs noon until 8:00 p.m. on Saturday, August 24 at the Des Moines Beach Park. Tickets are available at www.dmrotary.org, Airways Brewing Company, 99 Bottles, and B&E Meats. Admission is $25 in advance, $30 at the gate.

Free parking is available on-site. You must be 21 years old to attend.
