Virginia Lee Greenlee       

Virginia Lee (Ginny) Greenlee passed away on June 27, 2018 at Highline Hospital after a brief illness.  She was born on June 23, 1926, to Clyde Forest Greenlee and Dora Mae Greenlee in Monroe, Washington.  She attended elementary and high school in Ephrata, Washington, graduating in 1944.  She graduated from Washington State University in 1948. Ginny was a faithful and lifelong supporter of her home team.  Go Cougs!

 

Ginny was instrumental in shaping the beginning stages of women's volleyball.  She hosted the first state invitational tournament in 1973 at Renton High School.  In 1977, she was selected as the Washington State Volleyball Coach of the Year.  In 1979, she received the WIAA Service Award and was a nominee for National High School Coach of the Year.  Ginny coached volleyball for six years at Renton High School.  In addition she coached basketball for four years, and softball for two years.  She retired in 1978.  Ginny was inducted into the Washington State Volleyball Coaches Hall of Fame in 2006 and the WIAA Hall of Fame in 2010.

 

Ginny's retirement was filled with saltwater fishing, clamming, crabbing and boating, often from her cabin at Hood Canal.  She enjoyed spending time in her motor home and made many trips around the U.S.  She cherished her affiliation with the RVing Women where she developed many deep and lasting friendships.  Her love for sports included the Mariners and the Seahawks.

 

Ginny loved her family and friends.  She is preceded in death by her dear friend since college, Irene Hallett.  She is survived by her brother Clyde and his wife, Virginia; also nephews Michael and his wife, Mona; Chris and his wife, Debbie; nieces Diana and her husband, Jack, and Barbara.

 

Memorial services will be held at Judson Park, 23600 Marine View Drive South in Des Moines, on Friday, July 27th at 10:00am.  In lieu of flowers remembrances may be made to Ronald McDonald House Charities online at www.rmhcseattle.org/donate/.
