Over 14,000 people participated in the 2006 Komen Puget Sound Race on June 17 and Ballard resident Linda Stroud, a breast cancer survivor, was singled out as the Honorary Team New Balance Member
"I was very surprised and pleased," Stroud said. This year's race chairperson Susan Gilman nominated Stroud for the honor.
The race raised over $1.5 million for the Susan B.
The Ballard High School Foundation Art Committee dedicated a new painting by T. Michael Gardiner, while introducing a number of other new acquisitions on June 28.
Artwork by Archie Graber, Margaret Harding and Willard Parker were also seen for the first time in the school by a crowd of supporters and staff.
Gardiner's eight foot by 12 foot painting hangs over a hallway on the second floor Northwest wing of the building.
Entitled "Mars-I-Pan," the painting features a house by the north end of the Ballard Bridge owned by Edith Mayfield.
The Nordic Heritage Museum has completed a $5.1 million deal to purchase the Fenpro Building on Market Street to build a larger and more modern facility to meet its growing needs.
This is the prime location the museum Board of Directors was seeking. "We wanted to be very visible," said Executive Director Marianne Forssblad .
Now that the deal has been finalized, the first phase of the Nordic Heritage Museum Capital Campaign is done.
A long list of donors made the property acquisition possible.
When it comes to the menu of transportation choices, Mayor Greg Nickels is ordering meat and potatoes. He wants to raise nearly $2 billion in the next 20 years, to pay for repaving streets, filling potholes and fixing rickety bridges. Credit him for championing something as regular-grind as road maintenance. The shoddy road system is only going to get worse as the city's population swells and despite extolling the virtues of alternative transport, we drive a lot.
Transportation troubles are acute in Ballard. The mayor mentions 14th Avenue NW as an example of a problem road.

In response to the letter written by Barbara Schloredt in the Ballard News Tribune dated 6-14-06 concerning the yellow school buses. I agree with her 100% and I would like to know who owns the lots where the buses are parked? Many times I have driven past these lots and there are always buses sitting there. I sure wonder what we, as taxpayers, can do about this. I would like to see our children's neighborhood schools maintained, and not closed.
