Nettie "Natasha" Grenkavich

Born March 9, 1917 in Seattle, Washington to Andrew and Lucia Fasevich. Passed away peacefully on August 9, 2006. She was a graduate of Beacon Hill Grade School, Franklin High School (Class of '35), and Wilson Business College. Preceded in death by her husband Alex, whom she was married to for 56 years. She and her husband owned and operated High Point Shoe Repair, in West Seattle, for 35 years. She is survived by her sons, Philip (Jeny), of CA and Robert Sr.

Jimmie Dawson McClenaghan

Long time resident Jimmie Dawson McClenaghan passed away on August 16th at the age of 81.

Born January 22, 1925 in Garnett, Kansas, Jimmie was the eldest child of Aubrie Dias and Edna Belle Dawson McClenaghan.

A graduate of Selah High School in 1943, Jimmie began service in the United States Navy immediately after graduation. While in the service he was stationed in the South Pacific.

Upon completion of his military service Jimmie enrolled at Yakima Junior College where he studied for two years.

Arnold William Jarvimaki

Arnold William Jarvimaki, 85 passed away on August 4, 2006 in Coupeville, Washington. He was born in Shell Lake Township, Minnesota on December 26, 1920 to Eino and Anna (Longfos) Jarvimaki. He was the oldest of five children and he grew up learning to speak both Finnish and English languages.

He was worker in the production of Copper for Victory at the Anaconda Copper Mining Company in Butte, Montana and served in the Army as an infantryman where he was awarded a bronze medal for good conduct.

Arnold worked in heavy construction and was a licensed powderman.

LILLIAN WILLA SCHERMERHORN (Willa)

April 22, 1908 - August 7, 2006

At the age of 98 Willa passed away, she is preceded in Death by her husband Fred and son Doug. She is survived by a stepdaughter Diane and nephews and a number of close friends. Willa moved to West Seattle in 1957 and has lived there until her death on August 7, 2006.

At her request funeral services were private and for family and close friends only.

William David Smith

William David Smith was born on October 7, 1940 in Cresco, IA. Later the family moved to Kingman, AZ. Bill served in the National Guard from 1959-1967. He served in the Pacific.

After his tour he came to Seattle. Bill enjoyed dancing at the Mountaineers Club as well and the Seattle Center.

He worked at Alaska Copper and Brass. He was member of Teamsters. He was a member of the Eagles, and enjoyed Karaoke and dancing.

He danced to a unique rhythm that will always be remembered.

William passed away May 31, 2006.

Officers back in budget, fire emergency declared

Funding for four high school police officers was included in a $161.3 million general operating budget approved Aug. 9 by Highline School Board members.

Superintendent John Welch earlier had proposed removing funding for the school resource officers (SROs) at Highline, Evergreen and Tyee high schools to save $180,000.

But after the Burien City Council voted on July 31 to increase its share for the officer at Highline High from $20,000 to $50,000, Welch put the SROs back in the budget.

Shelfish Ban Spreads

Beaches in King County were closed to shellfish harvesting last week by the Washington State Department of Health.

The ban was originally for only the area from Three Tree Point in Burien south to the Pierce County line.

Health officials acted after marine biotoxins that cause paralytic shellfish poisoning were detected at concentrations above the safe level in shellfish samples.

Commercially harvested shellfish are tested prior to distribution and should be safe to eat, the department noted.

Kayakers congregate

It's been more than a year since the Army Corps of Engineers dismantled the rock baskets that armored the Seahurst Park shoreline.

Sea life is returning to the restored beach.

Now the public has the chance to see the changes and get their questions answered about the whats and whys of this massive waterfront improvement project.

"BYOK"-bring your own kayak-to the beach at Seahurst Park for this opportunity on Saturday, Aug. 19.

Paddle along the shoreline from 8:30 a.m. to 1 p.m.
