Unexpected 'great news'

The Supreme Court of our state upholds the institution of marriage, keeping it intact as being between one man and one woman. I was elated when I heard the news, because it looked like the decision would go the other way.

With so much erosion of positive values in our society by the courts, it was good to see the majority of the court uphold one of the most important institutions of our society, marriage. From its inception by God, marriage has always been between men and women.

Dartboard poll is first

My compliments to Craig Keller. In my limited exposure to the issue of viaduct options (tunnel, repair, rebuild or tear down), his poll at the West Seattle Street Festival is the first vote I've seen that asks citizens what should be done. Even if the poll was randomized at a dartboard.

Absent are the inflated opinions of developers, downtown boosters, shortsighted transportation luddites posing as environmentalists, lobbyists, paid consultants and other individuals and groups with either political or economic advantage at stake.

New story pole now at Admiral

The new Duwamish story pole was installed at Admiral Viewpoint last week and the totem pole that stood there the past 40 years has been moved to the Log House Museum at Alki.

A dedication ceremony is scheduled for 4 p.m. Friday, Aug. 11. City officials and Duwamish Tribe members are scheduled to attend. The story pole is located at about 3600 S.W. Admiral Way.

The new 25-foot story pole is more authentic than the totem pole that previously stood at the overlook.

Lady Hawks' titles stripped

Recruiting violations caught up with Chief Sealth High School last week when the school's back-to-back state basketball championships were taken away by the Washington Interscholastic Activities Association.

The statewide association announced the record books also will indicate the Lady Hawks forfeit every game they've played over the past four years. That includes all regular season, playoff and tournament contests from 2002 to 2006.

Sealth also took a hard slap from SeaKing District 2, the league of public and private schools among which Sealth is a member.

School merger here OK

The Seattle School board voted 5-2 to approve superintendent Raj Manhas' final recommendations on school closures, after a tense special meeting last week.

The merger of the Fairmount Park Elementary program at High Point Elementary sailed through along with six other closures, four of which are mergers.

During a second phase of closures this fall, the board plans to work with the community to find a location for the Pathfinder K-8 Alternative program, now in the deteriorating Genesee Hill facility.
