Bus stop

On Saturday morning, a citizen called 911 to report a reckless driver on 35th SW. But a Metro driver found him before officers did, when the northbound driver crashed into the front of the southbound coach at about 5 miles per hour. When officers arrived, the suspect was seated on the curb, walked unsteadily when brought to his feet and was unable to complete many of the alcohol sobriety tests. A sergeant ran different tests and determined that the suspect was under the influence of a narcotic.

School chief wants kids challenged

Schools in Ballard are doing a good job educating our children, but unless they are scoring 100 percent across the board there's always room for improvement, Seattle Schools superintendent Maria Goodloe-Johnson told a Ballard Rotary Club meeting.

Goodloe-Johnson said she does not discuss specific details about individual schools, but that the current district-wide academic statistics are not acceptable.

Homes can be fixed for aging

Many older Americans, especially those of the Baby Boom generation, desire to remain in their own homes rather than moving to one of the many retirement facilities in Seattle.

There are over 80 million baby boomers between the ages of 41 and 59 years old, but retirement homes may not be their only option.

Angie Creal, a for-profit retirement home executive, says the average rent for a room in their for-profit facilities, including two meals a day and weekly housekeeping, is about $3,000 a month.

Did you hear about the bank where they grow vegetables?

Interest rates are not the only thing growing at one local bank, vegetables are too.

Maggie McKelvy, the branch manager at HomeStreet Bank, came up with the idea of turning landscaping into a garden when she found a link to a New York Time's article on the Sustainable Ballard website.

The article discussed "eating local" and what people can do to reduce the carbon footprint.

"The idea popped into my head to grow vegetables at work. I asked everyone because I needed a team effort.
