NEW City says new townhouse standards will improve neighborhoods

Mayor Greg Nickels has sent legislation to the City Council that he says will improve the character and design of townhouses in Ballard and require environmentally sensitive building and landscaping.

"Most of us would agree that multifamily development must fit better into our neighborhoods," said Nickels in a statement. "These regulations will help ensure that this housing is attractive, sensible, and welcoming, while also supporting our affordable housing goals."

Multifamily development is often a first option for housing and can provide an entry into home ownership.

NEW Sundquist takes hard questions on school closures

As the School Board's decision regarding school closure draws near, members of the community met with West Seattle representative Steve Sundquist this morning to discuss their concerns regarding the relocation of Pathfinder, closure of the Cooper program and splitting of the Accelerated Progress Program (APP) at Lowell Elementary School.

The School Board member emphasized he has not decided how he will vote on any of the recommendations yet, but that he does believe the district needs to close buildings so that it can continue programs and address the needs of its students.

We caught up with them at the Hiawatha playfield next to West Seattle High School. "This is her favorite park," said James, "and she loves to come here and chase squirrels, though I never let off the leash." Powder also enjoys going out on the boat and helps pick up crab pots.
