A return of the ice age?

Armed with little more than shovels and imagination (along with a little free time), these twenty-somethings from Federal Way took advatage of the city's ample snowfall to construct a massive 9-foot by 8-foot igloo. The group packed snow into an empty recycle bin to create the massive snow blocks, which they stacked at an angle. They later filled in the cracks with more snow.

Saving Money in The New Year

A lot of the press that we read, see and hear nowadays is about how horrible the economy is without a whole lot of suggestions of what to do about it.

The bulk of what I have seen is about investment accounts with admonishments to pay down debt and even to snip your credit cards into pieces.

I'm supportive of scrutinizing one's budget and minimizing the use of credit, but after that's done, most of us will just sit back and wait for our personal microcosms to get better.

And though I don't think of myself as a penny pincher, I do think this is a good time to re

NEW Duwamish Longhouse opens

A prayer was made. The sun came out. And with the snip of a bright red ribbon the Duwamish Longhouse and Cultural Center opened its doors for business, pleasure, and a cold lesson in the realities of a tribe being placed back onto a map by those who tried to erase it, and by those who continued their hereditary connection to it.

More than 200 hundred filed into the standing-room only reception hall Saturday Jan.

NEW Enjoy one-year holiday from required minimum distributions

Provided by Jon Gerhardt

Although it sounds strange, you may encounter situations in which you have to accept money even if you’d rather not. Such is the case with required minimum distributions (RMDs) from your traditional IRA, 401(k) or other employer-sponsored retirement plan. But thanks to recent legislation, you can ignore the “required” part of RMDs, at least for a year.

Specifically, lawmakers recently placed a one-year moratorium on taking (RMDs) for 2009.

NEW 2009 begins with a plunge

While many area residents slept in on New Year's Day following an eve of merriment, nearly 40 "Polar Bear Swim Club" members headed for the beach. They thrilled and chilled as they raced into, and then quickly out of, the 48.6 degree Alki drink for the tenth straight year. The outdoor temperature was in the high 30's, and the goose bumps were-a-poppin'.

Said shivering swimmer Cara Mohammadia, "Every cell in your being tells you not to do it, but it's fun."

The Herald wishes to thank Greg Whittaker of Alki Kayak Tours for providing a boat for our coverage.

Golden Gardens Drive repairs delayed

Due to the recent snow storm, the city is delaying repairs to Golden Gardens Drive, which collapsed December 2007.

The damaged roadway was expected to be repaired last month, but the Seattle Transportation Department expects to finish the work by mid-February instead.

Working with the transportation department, the Golden Gardens Association, a newly formed group in August, has given their input to how they would like the road to be rebuilt due to concerns of pedestrian and driver safety along the frequently traveled road.

"People had concerns about how fast our neighbors and visitors to the area drove through our neighborhood," Mary Tott, one of the founders of the association recently told the News-Tribune.
