Well

This Play, author Lisa Kron says, is not about my mother.

Well. Let's see. Even as the playwright walks onto the stage, the audience has already met the sleeping form of her mother, who is snoring in an easy chair, her body covered in an afghan and her feet snuggled in puffy pink house-shoes. The actress playing the playwright tries to explain: this play is not about my mother and me; it is an exploration of certain themes, a place for discussion about why some people get sick and stay sick, and some people get well.

Local filmmaker covers 'ZZ Top'

Filmmaker Jamie Chamberlain spends half his time at his home in the Fauntleroy neighborhood, the other half at his Los Angeles digs. But that's only when he is home in the first place, because Chamberlain is one lucky guy. He makes his living hanging with the legendary rock group, ZZ Top, and film them in concert on tour in America, Spain, Portugal, and France. He has heard "Sharp Dressed Man," "Tush," and "Cheap Sunglasses" countless times, but who's complaining?

Remembering Admiral Theater's closure

Sadly, the century-old Alki Homestead burns. Easy Street Records turns 20. Another West Seattle mainstay also deserves attention this month.

On Thursday, Jan. 29, it will be "twenty years ago today" that the Southwest Seattle Historical Society picketed on the night Cineplex Odeon closed the Admiral Theater. The event attracted several dozen participants, including all our state and county office-holders, along with live TV news coverage.

Diaper drive huge success

The numbers are in and they are mind boggling! Our Westside Baby Diaper Drive on Monday, Jan. 19, at the Jefferson Square Safeway brought in a grand total of 10,000 diapers! According to Executive Director Nancy Woodland, this was one of the best diaper drives they've had aside from their huge Stuff the Bus event in July. Thanks to the Diaper Drive, Westside Baby will be able to serve the needs of 400 children.

Runway advocates fooled, too

Regarding the Des Moines News article, January 14, 2009: "Runway: To be "fully functional"

The Mayor of Des Moines was accurate in his understanding of the proposed usage of the third runway.

While Mayor Bob Sheckler was on the opposite side of the third runway debate and controversy, it is only fair to acknowledge that he has good reason to be indignant and, I hope, angry at what the port has done with a great display of arrogance.

Noise reaches Seahurst

Follow-up to article about third runway noise.

I was born and raised in the Seahurst neighborhood of Burien. I now live adjacent to Seahurst Elementary School.

I moved to Alaska in 1975 where I lived for 16 years. I enjoyed the peace and quiet of living near a spectacular wilderness. I returned to Burien in 1991 and purchased my parent's home after my mother died.

One of the first things I noticed was the airport noise.
