North Highline voters clearly decline Burien’s annexation offer

Eric Mathison contributed to this report

As the nation went to the polls on Nov. 6 to decide, amongst many other things, who would lead the U.S. for the next four years, voters in North Highline’s Area Y emphatically declined annexation to Burien, keeping their unincorporated status intact for the foreseeable future.

The culturally diverse swath of land between Seattle and Burien is home to an estimated 17,400 people over 2,045 acres, and includes White Center. As of Nov. 10, there were 3,254 voters saying no to annexation (65 percent), versus 1,766 (35 percent) looking for change.
“The vote was a heartfelt expression from the community,” Burien City Manager Mike Martin said once the results were in. “It removes the cloud of uncertainty for the city of Burien.”

“It clarifies our vision: It’s a good thing to know where our borders are.”

SPD on THC: Police release a guide to marijuana use in Seattle with passage of I-502

Written by Jonah Spangenthal-Lee with the Seattle Police Department on November 9, 2012

The people have spoken. Voters have passed Initiative 502 and beginning December 6th, adults over 21 years old can possess up to an ounce of marijuana (or 16 ounces of solid marijuana-infused product, like cookies, or 72 ounces of infused liquid, like oil) for personal use.

Marijuana has existed in a grey area in Seattle for some time now. Despite a longstanding national prohibition on marijuana, minor marijuana possession has been the lowest enforcement priority for the Seattle Police Department since Seattle voters passed Initiative 75 in 2003. Officers don’t like grey areas in the law. I-502 now gives them more clarity.

Marijuana legalization creates some challenges for the Seattle Police Department, but SPD is already working to respond to these issues head on, by doing things like reviewing SPD’s hiring practices for police officers to address now-legal marijuana usage by prospective officers, as well as current employees.

Burien artist Shelli Park's "Love Letters, An Installation" on display in Town Square retail space

A Fall celebration of art and craft features Burien Arts Commission's Shelli Park as well as her
Crimson Park Design line of furniture the public can view through the windows of Burien Town Square's 1200 square foot retail space at SW 151st St and 5th Pl. on the building's northeast corner.

Park's eclectic art instillation, an organized display including a small worn sailboat, paintings, and organic wood forms is called "Love Letters, An Installation". Park writes, “This installation is an opportunity to celebrate the interplay of art and craft, space and light, hubris vs. specific, community and the individual, and cause and effect in relationships."

"All of the wood in here including the wood for the Crimson furniture is made from Burien logs and (downed) black locust from the windstorm here last December," Park told the Highline Times. "The installation is going to be here until the first week of December. Over the course of the month more furniture and some lamps we make will appear.

Inside the Ballard ArtWalk

A talk with organizers and tour of art in October reveals what second Saturday is all about in Ballard

By Elizabeth Wang

Editor's note: Artists from this article were from the October Ballard ArtWalk. The November ArtWalk will take place Saturday, Nov. 10, at businesses and studios all around Ballard. You can find a map, list of artists and other goodies at the Ballard ArtWalk website, http://www.ballardartwalk.blogspot.com/p/artist-list.html

From animated colors and dark outlines to obscure shapes and felted crafts, local businesses around town hung up and shelved various artists’ works for the Ballard ArtWalk on Oct. 13.

Since 1997, the Ballard ArtWalk has been hosting artists and their designs in restaurants, galleries and stores alike on the second Saturday of every month, not only creating public awareness of these cultural offerings, but also promoting those businesses in the Ballard area that choose to participate.

“As a professional artist, I love working with business owners to create a dynamic and vibrant commu-nity event,” said Ballard Artwalk Board Member and felt-crafter Leah Adams in an email. “Supporting the arts is very important to me.”

Ballard ArtWalk this Saturday

It's second Saturday, you know the drill. It's the Ballard ArtWalk.

The Ballard ArtWalk will take place on Saturday, Nov. 10, from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m. Art from local artists will be displayed at various studios and businesses around town. A map of where to find them can be seen above.

This month, the stop motion animation and illustrations of Mari Ichimasu will be premiering at Annie's Art and Frame, with musical guests, Rats in the Grass.

Ichimasu's animation, LITTLE OZE, features hand-made mouse puppets and personally painted backgrounds. On the ArtWalk blog, she had this to say about it:

“I have been traveling the world in my imagination called Little Oze. Anything I see, meet, listen to or feel on this endless trip, I visualize in my projects like writing in a memo pad or journal. There are some interesting views and stories that I can’t help but document. Concepts often come from very small ordinary scenes in daily life that are often taken for granted. My mission is to be the voice and deliver the beauty of everything with a small and quiet existence.”

SLIDESHOW: Sneak peak of Museum of Flight's Space Shuttle trainer; Exhibit opens to public Saturday

SLIDESHOW: Click on photo for more

The public is invited to the grand opening of the Space Shuttle Trainer Exhibit at the Museum of Flight Saturday. A ceremony is scheduled for 11:00 a.m.

Museum staff promises that kids and other space enthusiasts will experience a "wow factor" upon entering the Charles Simonyi Space Gallery at first sight of the nose cone of the trainer. Some say the shape and paint scheme evoke a smiling face with arms extended. The vehicle measures 122 feet in length.
The wooden, flightless bird used by all Space Shuttle astronauts in Houston to train, was the museum's consolation prize as it tried for an actual retired Shuttle. There were four such vehicles, and with nearly 30 museums and airports competing, Seattle was overlooked.

However, the museum, and local politicians and astronauts have publicly expressed delight with the acquisition pointing out that the exhibit is much more interactive than the retired shuttles as the public can climb aboard and have a look around.
