Seola Gardens making progress as developer signs on to build 54 homes

Seola Gardens, the mixed-income community being developed by King County Housing Authority just east of Lakewood Park in White Center, is rising at a rapid rate in 2013 with rental housing nearing completion and developer Richmond American Homes signing on to build 54 properties for purchase.

Similar to the Greenbridge neighborhood in White Center, KCHA is developing Seola Gardens as a mixed-income community intended to “break up the concentration of poverty,” according to Rhonda Rosenberg, KCHA’s communications director.

Homebuilding at Seola stalled when the housing recession hit, but Rosenberg said Richmond’s commitment is a sign of changing tides.

Once completed, Seola will have a mixture of 177 subsidized workforce rental units, 107 homes sold at market value, and a senior housing and community center (operated by Providence Health and Services of Washington). There will also be public art installations, rain gardens, community gardens, play areas for kids and a Head Start program for preschoolers.

Rosenberg said KCHA hopes to have the rental housing completed in the fall of 2013.

Police shooting of mentally ill person in Greenwood results in death

Update, March 1, 2013:

The suspect's father, Henry Northwind, has said he was not being held hostage, did not have a knife to his throat and did not, in fact, feel in any particular danger, according to the Seattle Times, who spoke with him and the suspect's brothers. Northwind, however, did say his son was raging inside the home, pacing "fast and hard, jumping up and down and stomping on the ground," according to the Seattle Times.

In the report, Northwind also disputes the claim that an officer fell to the ground. He said he saw his son fall to the ground and pull out the piece of rebar from his pants, and then the officers surrounded him in a half circle and opened fire. "They killed him like a rabid dog," he told Seattle Times.

Original, Feb. 28, 2013:

30 seconds.

From the point that a suspect ran from the front porch of his house to the point that he was shot a total of approximately 8-9 times (the total is not final) by three different police officers, only 30 seconds had passed, said Seattle Police officials at a press conference today.

UPDATE 2: EPA proposes massive cleanup of Duwamish Waterway; Plan not equitable or sustainable says environmental group

EPA claims work will remove nearly 800,000 cubic yards of contaminated sediment

Second UPDATE, March 2:

Following the below press release issued by the EPA, Duwamish River Cleanup Coalition Policy Advisor Bj Cummings responded with her organization's own press release on the plan. She then shared her organization's positions on the plan with the West Seattle Herald:

"There is a lot to like in this plan," Cummings said. "It has gotten stronger through the last drafts I have seen. It is going in the right direction and has a lot of potential. But the problem all along has been that it does not provide adequate health protection for some of our most resource-dependent, vulnerable communities, particularly those who have any kind of cultural or subsistence relationship to the river. Fishermen and Tribes are not going to be adequately protected by the current plan.

"This doesn't necessarily mean do more and spend more," she said. "It means really look at who's benefitting and who's not. We're looking at this from an equity perspective, from a social justice perspective, and from an environmental perspective.

Water aerobics instructor kicks classes up a notch

By Lindsay Pease

Peter Brown grabs the diving board rails, lifting and swinging his legs like a pendulum.

“Pull both legs up to your right, and you better feel this in your obliques or you’re not doing it right,” he says. Next he jogs, cross-country skis and does crunches on the pool deck. While he breaks a sweat out of the water, Hydrofit/Deep Water exercise students mimic his moves under water.

Brown, 21, teaches Hydrofit classes three times a week at the Ballard Pool. Deep water exercisers first clip on a buoyancy belt, then select foam weights to hold for more water resistance. Some more experienced students wear foot weights and resistance gloves. Once class starts, Brown leads the class in interval exercises, increasing in speed and intensity each time. He likes to keep the class fast-paced, despite that it’s harder to do the exercises in the water than out.

“If I go slow, I don’t seem like I’m trying and the class won’t meet my intensity.”
