A Seattleite's guide to cooling off in the heat

From spray parks and wading pools to swimming pools and beachs

From Seattle Department of Parks and Recreation

When it’s hot, Seattle residents don’t need to go far to cool off. Seattle Parks and Recreation has a long list of places to get cool in the water, including beaches, wading pools and water spray features, and outdoor pools.

Beaches

Parks offers safe, lifeguarded beaches at nine sites around the city, and we strongly recommend swimming only where lifeguards are present. Beaches are open daily, weather permitting, from noon to 7 p.m. weekdays and 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. on Saturdays and Sundays. Amenities range from swim rafts and low and high diving boards to nearby wading pools, play areas, ballfields, and more.

These beaches are open through September 2:

  • Matthews, 9300 51st Ave. NE
  • Madison, 1900 43rd Ave. E
  • Mt. Baker, 2301 Lake Washington Blvd. S
  • Seward, 5902 Lake Washington Blvd. S
  • West Green Lake, 7312 W Green Lake Dr.

These beaches are open through August 25:

  • East Green Lake, 7201 E Green Lake Dr. N
  • Magnuson, park entrance at NE 65th and Sand Point Way NE

Teens arrested for breaking into West Seattle schools

Two teenagers, ages 14 and 15, were arrested on June 27 after they were caught red-handed burglarizing Highland Park Elementary by police.

According to the Seattle Police Department, the teens had smashed a window to gain access to the building shortly before 11 p.m. Police were alerted and responded to the elementary with their K-9 units and found the young crooks hiding under some playground equipment.

Police recovered, "a Nook e-reader, a CD player, camera, backpack, cellphones, phone charger, microphones, walkie talkies and speakers, all stolen from inside the school."

One of the suspects then told police he had burglarized Sanislo Elementary earlier in the evening.

The juveniles were arrested and booked at the Youth Service Center before being released to their parents custody, for what was likely a not-very-fun car ride home.

It’s a bird, it’s a plane, it’s a … tree tub grinder tooth? Police investigate metal from the sky

Seattle police are investigating the source of a heavy piece of metal that crashed through the roof and ceiling of a South Park family’s home on June 23.

The family called 911 a few days after the incident. The mysterious hunk of metal didn’t injure anyone, but certainly could have as it tore through shingles, wood, drywall and insulation into their home. Police said it weighs three pounds and measures eight by six inches in dimension.

Responding officers first thought it may have fallen from a plane coming in for a SeaTac landing, as the home at the corner of 7th Ave .S. and S. Director St. is under flight paths, so they contacted the FAA.

Later, police said the strange item appears to be a tooth from a tree tub grinder, which is essentially an industrial grade wood chipper that turns large limbs and branches into pureed mulch.

No word yet on the mysterious metal’s origin, but one SPD officer commented it “may have fallen from an aircraft or a really big bird that had stolen a lead bar.”

SLIDESHOW: The Highland Park Spraypark is open and kids are delighted

The long awaited Highland Park Spraypark at 1100 SW Cloverdale opened to a waiting group of kids and parents on June 28 and kids started squealing with delight as soon as the water started spraying. As the Herald reported yesterday the park cost $635,000 to build and while its scale might seem small, the money was spent to make it both varied and very safe and economical. The water in the park goes through a very sophisticated filtration and recirculation system that cuts water use.

The kids who showed up for the opening were thrilled with the tipping buckets, and water jets built into the cement and ran, hopped, and otherwise went a little crazy as the cool water seemed to come from almost everywhere. The water doesn't run constantly. It's on a timer. But it can be turned with the push of a button to start the cycle running. After a few seconds, you are in waterworld.

Man shows up in Auburn hospital 10 hours after allegedly getting shot in West Seattle

According to Seattle Police, gang detectives are investigating a possible High Point neighborhood shooting in the early morning hours of June 28 after a man walked into an Auburn hospital 10 hours later, claiming he was shot in the leg.

Around 1 a.m., police received reports of gunshots near the intersection of Lanham Place S.W. and S.W. Morgan St. Police investigated, but were unable to find a victim or suspect.

Around 11 a.m. that morning, a man in his 30's walked into the Auburn hospital for treatment of a gunshot wound to his leg, claiming he was shot in West Seattle.

SPD said they are investigating the claim, trying to figure out why it took him so long to get to the hospital, and why he never called police after getting shot.

Pavement work to temporarily close Sea-Tac’s
center runway this summer

Construction period scheduled for July 8 - August 2

Press release:

The Port of Seattle is alerting area residents to a scheduled temporary center runway closure for pavement work this summer at Seattle-Tacoma International Airport.

During the closure, airport neighbors may notice changes in runway use as the two outside runways will be used more frequently. All air traffic will be directed to Sea-Tac’s two other open runways during the project.

The construction work, scheduled for July 8-August 2, will extend the life of the runway.

The runway closure will not affect airline flight schedules or passengers. Construction work will occur primarily during daytime hours. The timing takes advantage of dry, sunny weather — ideal construction conditions — to reduce the total time of the closure.

July 8 – August 2 Closure Details

Highline schools approves negotiations to sell ex-Navos site to Burien

Over the objections of Burien resident Chestine Edgar, the Highline School Board voted June 26 to negotiate a sale of the former Navos mental health center site to the city of Burien.

Burien wants to use a portion of the property to build a storm water facility for its Northeast Burien Redevelopment Area (NERA) project.

The old Sunny Terrace Elementary School is located at 1010 S. 146th St, near Sea-Tac Airport’s third runway. Navos occupied the 9.8-acre site from 1979 to Oct. 2012, before moving to its new facility at Southwest 136th Street and Ambaum Boulevard Southwest. The Sunny Terrace site is now vacant.

The site is within the NERA boundaries, which stretch from South 138th Street to South 152nd Street between 8th Avenue South and Des Moines Memorial Drive South.

Because it is next to the airport, the city and Port want to develop the area with warehouses and other airport-related industrial uses. Burien officials have also suggested new car dealerships along First Avenue South could move to an auto mall along Des Moines Drive.
