Seattle Department of Transportation Seeks Public Input on Design for South Lander Street Bridge Project

The Seattle Department of Transportation (SDOT) is in the early stages of design to build a bridge over South Lander Street between 1st Avenue South and 4th Avenue South in Seattle’s SODO district to improve traffic, freight mobility, and safety in that neighborhood.

SDOT is currently revisiting the overall project design to ensure the safest, most effective solution and is seeking input on early design elements. SDOT is committed to engaging adjacent businesses, area stakeholders, and the broader community in these initial project design conversations. SDOT is reactivating the project design thanks to the voter-approved Levy to Move Seattle and appropriations from the state Legislature.

To learn more about the project and provide input on key elements of early design:

Attend the project open house on Wednesday, June 8, from 4 p.m. to 6 p.m. at Metropolist, located at 2931 1st Ave South in Seattle.

Bok A Bok Chicken opens in White Center

Eager customers waiting in lines for Korean fried chicken yesterday at the opening of Bok A Bok Fried Chicken (1521 SW 98th St, Suite D.) in White Center.

Former Skillet and Roux chef, Brian O'Connor, opened the restaurant with partners that include Jael DeLeonardis with hopes to make their mark in the growing White Center restaurant revitalization.

By mark, O’Connor means the “Crunchiest Korean fried chicken you've ever tasted.” His chicken is air dried after it’s drenched in cornstarch then set in Tempura style batter before the fryer. Thighs, wings, drumsticks and breast strips are all served with four chili hot sauces, sesame soy garlic sauce, Bok A Bok Ranch and Korean BBQ.

But chicken is not all O’Connor is offering, per se. Chef O’Connor is classically trained in French cooking, but has worked with many different cuisines, and he brings that to the table with four sandwiches, two of which are the Sesame Soy Garlic Chicken Sandwich and the Yuzu Green Chile Chicken Sandwich. A fan favorite is the Korean BBQ Chicken Sandwich, which is gochujang BBQ sauce, ginger cabbage slaw, and fresh herbs over chicken on a soft bun.

Don't keep family in the dark about your plans

You might work diligently at building a financial road map for your retirement years and a comprehensive estate plan. But you can’t just create these strategies – you also have to communicate them. Specifically, you need to inform your spouse and your grown children what you have in mind for the future – because the more they know, the fewer the surprises that await them down the road.

Let’s start with your spouse. Ideally, of course, you and your spouse should have already communicated about your respective ideas for retirement and have come to an agreement on the big issues, such as when you both plan to retire, where you’ll live during retirement, and what you want to do as retirees (volunteer, travel, work part time and so on).

But what you both might have let slip through the cracks are the important specifics related to financing your retirement. You’ll need to answer several questions, including these:
When will you each start taking Social Security?
Are there strategies for maximizing both of your Social Security payments?

Sports Radio Host is Featured in May #HighlineAlum Campaign

Mount Rainier High School alum Dick Fain credits Highline teachers and coaches to success

KJR sports radio host and voice of the WNBA Seattle Storm Dick Fain is featured in this month’s #HighlineAlum social media campaign. Fain is a 1992 graduate of Mount Rainier High School.

Fain began his career in broadcasting at KJR in 1997 and worked his way up to show host and sports director. He is the host of the Live @5:30 show and co-host of the Mitch in the Morning show. Fain is entering his ninth year as the voice of the WNBA Seattle Storm and is in his third year as a fill-in sports anchor on KING-5 TV.

“This is a special place that we should all be proud of. The diversity of the district is second to none. It should be celebrated,” said Fain. “There are so many kids that I went to school with that all went their separate ways in college and in their 20s. Look where they came back to 15 years later to raise their kids. There is a reason for that and Highline should take great pride in that fact.”

Watch Fain’s video here.

Highline boasts a long list of well-known and accomplished alumni and dozens of grads you haven't yet heard of who are making their mark on the world.
