SAKA: Changes coming soon to the Duwamish Head viewpoint parking area

District 1 City Councilmember Rob Saka shared this update on changes coming for the Duwamish Head viewpoint parking area this spring and summer.

Because Alki’s Duwamish Head is a prime location for ongoing loud street racing and criminal activities into the early morning hours, I identified funding in the budget to study and implement a reconfiguration of the parking in 2025. According to SDOT, the project is expected to be completed by the end of June pending a number of variables, including weather and emergencies, crew schedules, design variables, sign production, and procurement of materials. Outreach (primarily to inform nearby residents) will happen in early May, and construction will happen throughout late May and early June. This will include grinding angled parking stalls, installing barriers, and updating channelization and signs.

Floating piers at Don Armeni being reinstalled

Bellingham Marine crews are working to complete the retrofit after the initial design failed; New security enhancements are now in place

Bellingham Marine Industries (BMI) is currently working on the Don Armeni Boat Ramp Replacement Project in West Seattle. The boat ramp initially reopened in March 2024, but in the interim, the hinges between the floats failed, and the concrete on the floats was spalling and cracking.

To address these structural issues, BMI is removed all the concrete floats, except those connected to the abutment on both the north and south sides of the ramp. The removal process began on November 7, 2024, and the floats have been stored within the boat launch facility parking lot. BMI collaborated with Seattle Parks and Recreation on a retrofit design, and the replacement floats are now being installed.

On April 15, the Transportation Committee met related to important legislation authorizing the expansion and new deployment of automated traffic safety cameras. In light of changes to Washington state law in 2024, the City drafted legislation to comply with state law and began the process of deploying this important camera technology for those neighborhoods that were asking for it. This legislation builds on the actions our Council has taken to support camera technology and on my efforts to support this crucial technology.

Police arrest woman accused of throwing stolen hot coffee at West Seattle gas station clerk

Information from Seattle Police Blotter

Seattle police arrested a 33-year-old woman on Thursday after she reportedly stole hot coffee from a West Seattle gas station and then threw the cup of joe at a clerk when she was asked to pay.

Officers responded to the gas station in the 5400 block of Delridge Way Southwest on April 10 at about 9:17 p.m. to find a 45-year-old employee wet and smelling of coffee with a bright red face, neck, and chest. He told Seattle police he was in severe pain.

The man working in the gas station told investigators the 33-year-old woman came into the store and lingered for about 15 minutes without buying anything. The employee reported the woman then went to a coffee station and filled two cups with hot coffee and left the store with one of the cups without paying. The second cup was abandoned at the counter.
