Racial Discrimination
Nine minority staff members filed a racial discrimination claim with the U.S. Equal Employment Opportunity Commission against Ethelda Burke. Burke who was the Tukwila superintendent and is African American stepped down from the district's top post last July amid the controversy. Staff member said she often used inappropriate slurs during the school day. JD Hall who is the Athletics and Actives director at Foster High school said she called him, "J Darky", and said he was making her district look like a ghetto for hiring African American coaches and African American bus drivers. Friday the agency release their finding saying their investigations found "sufficient evidence to indicate a hostile work environment consisting of race and color harassment." Tukwila School District denies the allegations. Foster High Schools former assistant principal said he hopes the federal agency's finding bring change and a better work environment. The district and teachers will meet together and try and reach a settlement or the case will be handed over to the department of justice.
