“Our focus is on bringing every child inside,” Mitchell said. “It’s housing first. And we’re getting people out of shelters and into housing as fast as we possibly can.”
She explained that as Seattle faces a housing crisis, more people are in need of assistance. “A lot of them have income, but they just can’t find affordable housing,” she said.
Emily Inlow-Hood, spokeswoman for the City of Burien, emphasized the importance of community engagement in all programs addressing social service issues.
She added that Mary’s Place has a record of providing needed resources.
“Mary's Place provides the type of services that are extremely valuable to communities,” she said. “Mary’s Place can provide needed services to Burien residents and has demonstrated their capability throughout the Puget Sound region.”
Now Mary’s Place will have a permanent space to provide its services to families experiencing homelessness.
The Burien location will also serve those in Mary’s Place Popsicle Place program, which serves homeless families with medically complex or critically ill children.
A team of firms, including Aspect Consulting, Buchalter, Cochran Electric, GLY Construction, Kinzer Partners, McCullough Hill Leary PS, McKinstry, Pacific Rim Environmental, Pacifica Law Group, Perkins+Will, Seneca Group, Snyder Roofing and Talon Private Capital, came together to provide more than $50,000 of in-kind and pro bono services for Mary’s Place purchase of the Burien property.
Philanthropists Mark and Lisa Caputo partnered with Mary’s Place to purchase the $5 million property, providing a $1 million gift and an interest-free loan.
