Admiral Post Office
Editor's Note: A copy of this open letter to Ernie Swanson, Seattle District of the United States Post Office, was sent to this newspaper.
Whatta crock! Closing the Admiral post office will be a disaster.
I suggest Mr. Swanson that you make an appraisal of our main post office at 4412 California Ave. S.W. to determine its inadequacy, crowded quarters, long lines, insufficient parking in the lot and street.
The antiquated building dates back to the '40s or more and never has been adequate in view of the population increase. No matter the time of day, always a line-up inside and out. Even the drive-through mailbox creates a waiting line at times due to some inconsiderate motorist who insists on making a left-hand turn amidst heavy traffic on California Avenue. Many years ago a "No Left Turn" was posted, but it was ignored by some and drivers turned regardless - hence the demise of the sign.
Verne Valentine and his Admiral post office has been a true godsend, and if he chooses to terminate his contract, Mr. Swanson, then please build us a new, larger and better post office in a location accessible to all.
The Admiral location has been my post office for many, many years and have found Verne Valentine and employees pleasant and willing to serve everyone. I happen to be "old fashioned" enough to like and depend on our "community post office" and the people who serve.
Further, I can't believe with the postage increase twice in two years, the Admiral post office can't be properly funded to continue its service to our community.
Verne Valentine and his staff have given more than "100 percent" to one and all customers served in 251/2 years for which I and many others must be grateful.
Mr. Swanson, please don't allow this closure to happen.
