Innocent plea in shooting
The 16-year-old stepbrother of Michael Miller pleaded innocent on Oct. 3 to a charge of first-degree manslaughter.
Jordan Tautua-Jantoc was released to his family under the conditions that he stay at home, and be allowed out only to go to school, visit his attorney or make a court appearance.
Miller was fatally shot on Sept. 21 when the two boys were in the basement of their Boulevard Park home. Tautua-Jantoc allegedly picked up out a .380 caliber semi-automatic handgun.
Tautua-Jantoc allegedly was wearing gloves at the time the gun suddenly went off. The bullet struck Miller in the collarbone.
According to investigators, Miller told Tautua-Jantoc to call 911, but instead he called his father and then ran from the house.
Miller died at the scene.
Tautua-Jantoc was charged as an adult because of the crime. If found guilty he could face six to eight years in prison.
Pac Highway prostitution
A Des Moines Police officer was working undercover with the Street Crime Unit on Sept. 30 around 10 p.m. on Pacific Highway, doing surveillance on a known drug dealer, when he noticed a woman walking between S. 226th St. and S. 240th St.
The woman-who had been contacted about prostitution in the area several times before, and said she would continue to work as a prostitute because the money was good-was motioning to and making eye contact with male drivers.
When the surveillance operation was finished, the office motioned to the woman who followed him into a parking lot. Upon recognizing the officer she stopped and dropped her head.
She told the officer that she had already had seven customers that night and had made $500. She was booked into the King County Jail.
