The second design review is scheduled tonight for a mixed-use building that will replace the Sunset Bowl.
At the first meeting in July, AvalonBay Communities Inc. presented its preferred design option along with a few alternatives to the city-appointed volunteer board.
Board members said the massing and scale of the proposed building at 1400 N.W. Market St., which would hold 234 market-rate apartments and about 14,000 square feet of retail space, did not fit in well with the character of the surrounding streets.
AvalonBay has developed its "communities" across the country, from New York City to southern California. A local example is Avalon Belltown, at 2800 Western Ave. Rents there range from $1,125 to $2,495 per month, according to the company's Web site.
The review will take place at 6:30 p.m. tonight in the Ballard High School Library, 1418 N.W. 65th St. The public is invited to make comments at this time or contact city planner Scott Kemp, 233-3866.
