Seattle Public Schools will hold its annual Family and Community Engagement and Response to Intervention (RTI) symposium on Saturday, May 16, from 8:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. at the John Stanford Center auditorium.
Families and community members are invited to attend. Seattle Public Schools families and community partners will learn about district strategies to support student academic achievement. One of the major goals of the district’s strategic plan, Excellence for All, is that the whole community is engaged as partners in supporting and strengthening the school system.
Wanda Brown, director of support, prevention and intervention said, “Seattle Public Schools is implementing RTI as a way to provide structured, coordinated intervention support to students struggling both academically and in social/emotional areas. This symposium will create an opportunity for our district families to receive extensive training in our support, intervention and prevention strategies and provide a clearer sense of their roles in supporting their children’s academic success.”
The one-day symposium will feature special guest speaker Dr. Steve Constantino, associate superintendent for leadership and learning for the Georgia Cobb County School District. As a national consultant, Constantino has provided numerous keynotes, presentations, and workshops at national and regional conferences on the subject of family engagement in education.
Constantino has written three books on the topic of family engagement: "Making Your School Family Friendly" (2002); "Engaging All Families" (2003); and "101 Ways to Create Real Family Engagement" (2008). He has also authored several articles which have appeared in publications both in the United States and abroad.
At the symposium, families and community members will get a chance to learn about the recently adopted Response to Intervention Framework, family and community engagement strategies, performance management and services and projects being offered by the Family Support and Community Partnerships Program, The Source, Higher Education access, Guided Language Acquisition Design (GLAD), among others.
