Kainoa Rosa of Thomas Jefferson works on his service for the SPSL Central season
Thomas Jefferson head coach Andrew Buchan looks forward to his 19th season as Thomas Jefferson head boys tennis coach after compiling a 195-42 career record.
Last season, the Raiders stroked to a 14-2 team won-loss record and second place behind 16-0 Kentridge, which went on to become league champion.
With an abundance of top flight returning talent, the Raiders figure to be top contenders again.
Top returners for Buchan feature experienced West Central District players as well as letter winners.
Senior Joe Lee has qualified for district three times, including singles last season. Lee is multi-talented as a 4.0 student, ASB president, state champion in viola, and a national champion in math.
“When I’m on the court, my only focus is on the match,” declared Lee. “I’m a determined state player as my goal. Our team is experienced and I’m an all-round player in style.”
Freshman Kaina Rosa qualified for WCD in doubles with his brother Makoa Rosa last year. Makoa, now a junior, has qualified for WCD twice in doubles. Junior Brandyn Gomez is a district doubles player from last season. Qualifying for district in doubles as a freshman and sophomore, senior Branden Muraki looks for a big year. Seniors Kyle Creek (2-year letter winner), Michael Suh (letter winner last year) and Eric Kim (letter winner from last year) round out the experience-loaded TJ tennis squad.
“A lot of guys worked hard over the off-season,” stated Creek. “We did a lot of tournaments and know what to expect from the other teams. My goal is district and don’t put a slow ball over the net or I’ll put it away. We know how to play and work hard.”
Buchan’s predicted order of the Central Division finish, excluding Jefferson, is Todd Beamer, Curtis, Auburn Riverside, Decatur and Federal Way.
Overall, senior-laden Kentridge returns its entire team from a 16-0 season and is favored to win state.
Top players in the SPSL Central are Todd Beamer’s Joseph de la Cruz who placed 6th in state singles as a freshman plus TJ’s Kaina Rosa, Joe Lee and Makoa Rosa.
