April showers finally drowned out the Tyee Tennis team's scheduled April 27th home match against Hazen, although the Totems did not yield to the elements without a fight.
On this day of mixed overcast conditions blended with intermittent, but strong showers and periods of clearing, the Tyee tennis team showed great camaraderie and enthusiasm in using squeeges and brooms to remove the excess water on the courts.
Despite the efforts, game, set and match went to the inclement weather.
For today, the prospective singles positions were set. For the girls, senior Lacey Mudd lined up at No. 1 singles while junior Roxanne Castro set up at No. 2. On the boys side, Totem senior Nizom Kutbidinov prepared to take the court at No. 1 with junior John Wallawine at the net for No. 2.
"My expectations are to win more matches at the league tournament this year,: said Mudd. "My experience practicing against players who hit hard causes me problems when I play the soft hitters. I overhit the ball. I'm trying to be more consistent with my serve, too," she said.
In the girls doubles, freshman Savannah Williams and junior Lourdes Gall looked forward to their outing. Two freshmen, Vy Nguyen and Kevin Huynh were listed at boys' doubles.
Anxious to play at mixed doubles, seniors Johnson Huynh and Nikki Hem had to set aside their rackets for another day.
Huynh played No. 2 singles last season, but wanted to play mixed doubles this year.
"For me, singles was just too intense," said Huynh. "It's my senior year and I wanted to have fun and enjoy playing with someone I get along well with, like Nikki."
Fourth year head coach Kin Yee continues to build the Tyee program's foundation.
Although his team is 0-10, there is promise for a brighter future.
"The goal is to bring Tyee tennis back to the level it had in the 2000's," Yee related. "Our players are really enthusiastic and want to play. Our turnout is greater this year, so we have full varsity and junior varsity teams. The JV team is entirely freshmen. It's a very young team, overall, with a promising majority of members. In the summer, I want our players to get together on their own as individuals for some playing time together. Most of our sports participants are from the Global school Tyee High School. I would like to see more interaction, participation and support from the other two sections of the small school concept to get more school spirit."
