The produce truth

(Editor's note: The Times/News received 15 other letters from students in Jamie Soule's 6th-grade class at Normandy Park's Marvista Elementary School expressing similar views. Thanks for writing, kids. We should note however that since this letter was originally sent and posted, it appears that it may well be untrue. We are still checking, But for now be advised that this may not in fact be accurate. We will keep it online for the time being because the kids intent is positive but the UPC code designations may not be what they say).
Hello all of you (probably) Unknowing GMO Produce Buyers.
I, Emma Hart, have the latest news on the produce you are purchasing.
Have you ever wondered what the UPC code (sticker on produce with a number on it) means? Sure, you probably know that if the code starts with 4, it isn't organic but is fine to eat, and if it starts with 9, it is organic.
But, have you ever seen a 3 start the code? Could the apple or carrot sitting in your refrigerator have the deadly "3" sticker on it? After reading this letter hopefully, you will never again buy the #3 produce!
I know you are probably on the edge of your seat with suspense, wondering what the "3" means. So, I might as well tell you.
Any produce with an UPC code starting with 3, was grown with GMO seeds. GMO stands for Genetically Modified Organisms. In non-fancy terms, that means produce that has been grown with genetic traits, to make the fruit or vegetables enhanced in color, shininess, flavor and even size!
No one knows what GMOs can do to humans over an amount of time, and so far, they are not concerned to find out.
I received this shocking news, in 6th grade health class, "learning about good eating habits."
Our class was astonished to learn the news and was suddenly on the lookout. Some of us would make an effort to go to the produce section to look for the horrible "3" sticker in local grocery stores.
Some of the produce I saw was nearly a dollar more than a normal apple or orange, etcetera. The real scam is that the GMO enhanced produce isn't as good quality as the less expensive fruits, and veggies.
The only way to make sure the producers stop producing this "poison" is to stop buying it!
The big problem is that almost no one knows this information! So, we need your help to distribute this highly important information! If you want to do something to help spread the word, our class would be honored for you to put this information on the air...or at least spread the word. Our goal is to make sure everyone is as informed as possible.
Thank you for your time in reading this letter.
