The Alki Community Council sponsored Alki Plaza Summer Concert & Family Fun Day arrives Sunday, September 12 from noon to 7:30 p.m.
“This is the first year a Plaza festival will be held under the auspices under the Alki Community Council, said ACC spokesperson Libby Carr. “There has been an event there the last three Septembers. On September 11 it was Mayor Nickels dedicating the new statue on the old pedestal. Last Sept. 19 West Seattle Astronaut Gregory C. Johnson was there for the time capsule dedication.
“We dissolved our prior organization, the Seattle Statue of Liberty Plaza Project as we promised we would when the mission was accomplished,” said Carr. “It was accomplished when the plaza was completed. We passed the torch to the Alki Community Council. We have a memorandum of agreement now between the ACC and Parks Department. We wanted a public celebration of the ACC as the sort of ‘go-to organization’ and thought maybe we could do this annually.
“The ‘Dysfunction Junction’ bluegrass band we found at Bellevue Strawberry Festival will perform,” enthused Carr. “The ACC booth is sponsoring ‘The Writers of West Seattle’ and we encourage local authors to contact me and to bring their books.
“So far, event sponsors so far include Pharmaca, Cactus, Tom’s Automotive, Pet Care Center, Ncompass Construction, and it looks like we will make our expenses.”
New Alki resident Sandy Payne is helping Carr and the ACC organize the event.
I’ve lived in Seattle 15 years, and just moved to Alki from East Lake,” Payne said. “I love Alki because there is something going on here every day. Until I moved here I had only seen the Liberty statue on TV. It gets so much attention. I think they did a really nice job. People are always taking pictures around the Plaza.”
Payne, who said she has always volunteered for environmental groups, little league, and scouts, encourages people to attend the celebration.
“The economy is bad, and we’re putting on a free event,” she said. And you don’t have to spend any money.”
