A crew from SFD cleans up a small amount of mercury found at the West Seattle Rotary Club totem pole. Mercury is a highly toxic substance so, the presence of it drew a haz mat response.
Fire Department and haz mat crews responded to what was described as a "small amount" of mercury reported on the ground at the Rotary Club totem pole at 35th S.W. and S.W. Alaska Street around 2:15 pm Sep. 3.
The incident commander for SFD said the source was unknown and "There was no glass of the type you might find in a thermometer or other kind of device like that, that uses mercury."
Crews were cleaning up the material and expected it to be resolved fairly quickly.
