Smashed in windows, slashed tires and more were part of the severe vandalism that Burien CARES animal shelter suffered.
CARES Animal Shelter, a non-profit organization serving as the Animal Care & Control authority for the city of Burien, has been struck by severe vandalism and what leaders are describing as a deliberate "act of Hate". The incident targeted the shelter's vehicles, resulting in extensive damage.

The vandalism occurred at the shelter's location at 909 SW 151st St. According to reports from the organization, the destruction inflicted on their truck and van was substantial: SIX tires were slashed, three sets of windows were shattered, and a large passenger mirror was destroyed.
Owner Debra George stated that she believes the incident was a targeted attack. The shelter publicly questioned the motivation behind the actions, asking: "Why would anyone target a small nonprofit that’s here to help animals and do good in this community?".
CARES leadership suggested the attack may be connected to people spreading "rumors, lies, and create stories" intended to harm the organization. The shelter noted that targeted destruction "has no place in our community" and stressed that tearing down those trying to help ultimately hurts the animals further.
Investigation Underway
Video footage related to the incident has been provided to law enforcement, and an investigation is currently underway. The shelter is asking anyone who may have information to contact them or the police.
CARES Animal Shelter plays a crucial role in the region. In addition to serving as the Animal Care & Control authority for Burien, the non-profit provides emergency sheltering services for Federal Way and Des Moines. Their work focuses on public safety, the health and welfare of domestic animals, and enforcing relevant state and county laws.
Despite limited resources and funding constraints, CARES remains committed to operating as a no-kill shelter. The organization handles over 1,000 animal intakes annually and maintains a remarkable 65% return-to-owner (RTO) rate. For animals not reunited with their owners, CARES tirelessly seeks loving forever homes.
The organization emphasized that public support is vital to help them continue their mission following the attack.
