King County Metro officially ushered in the summer season today with a festive "Make it a Boat Day" launch event at Pier 50, featuring cultural exhibits, live music, and the unveiling of a new look for the Water Taxi.
The celebration began at 11:00 a.m. with remarks from King County Metro Deputy General Manager Ernest Kandilige and Marine Division Director Terry Federer. A highlight of the morning was the arrival of a Water Taxi sporting a vibrant new summertime boat wrap, signaling the start of a campaign to encourage residents and visitors to explore West Seattle and Vashon Island.
The event emphasized the deep history of the Seattle waterfront. Attendees had the opportunity to view the "Filipinos and Washington’s Waterfront" exhibit, which honors the Filipino community’s essential role in the development of the area. Additionally, officials shared details regarding a forthcoming sidewalk art installation at Pier 50, created in partnership with 4Culture and Snoqualmie artist Taylor Cameron.
The atmosphere at the dock was lively, featuring music at the pier and a live DJ who performed on board for the 11:30 a.m. sailing to West Seattle. Passengers on the crossing enjoyed views of Elliott Bay while receiving special items commemorating the "Make it a Boat Day" initiative.
The campaign aims to position the Water Taxi as a primary gateway for summer exploration, inviting everyone to discover the unique offerings of the West Seattle and Vashon communities.
