I was interested in Tahnee Runion's letter explaining why she voted "no" on the Highline School District bond.
Four years ago, my husband and I started helping a great teacher at Midway Elementary School. When my daughter from Jackson, Miss., visited me, she accompanied me to Midway.
When you think of Mississippi schools, sad to say, you think the worst.
When my daughter saw Midway, she said, "This is embarrassing.”
My daughter is an elementary school librarian, and another daughter in Jackson teaches a "gifted" class. The schools they teach in are so much nicer than Midway Elementary.
Midway has no cafeteria. The children line up in the hallway to get their lunch, take their trays back to their desks in the classroom and eat at their desks.
Airplanes fly directly over the school and the playground, so hopefully the new school will be well insulated. Midway school is an old building.
As Mr. Eliason, chairman of the Highline Citizens for Schools, says, "You can't have a quality education without having a healthy, safe school.”
I am happy the school bond passed.
