Strangers in the night
Tue, 04/04/2006
After meeting a man in a White Center bar, a woman found out that
he had nowhere to stay and no way to get anywhere, so she invited
him to spend the night on her couch. After he made a pass at her
and made a statement that frightened her, she called 911. A
background check showed that her guest was under the supervision of
the Department of Corrections and was not supposed to be drinking.
(Both he and the woman were obviously intoxicated.) The man was
booked into King County Jail for violating the terms of his DOC
agreement.
A man who admits to being "manic" and on medication for bi-polar
disorder was arrested in the Genesee Hill area after a number of
threatening and profane public disturbances in the Junction on
Monday evening. The officer who stopped the 42-year-old man noted
that the suspect exhibited extreme mood swings and repeatedly used
profanity. he was booked into King County Jail for investigation of
harassment, assault, and 3rd-degree criminal trespass.
A 39-year-old man called 911 to say that he had "broken things" and
thrown them into the street. Officers arriving at the California
Ave. SW address found shattered flower pots and other hazards in
the middle of the road. The man was in his house screaming at the
radio and talking incoherently. He asked the officers for help,
stating that he was bi-polar and had not been taking his
medications. He was taken to Harborview for an involuntary mental
health evaluation.
Thanks to an alert citizen who called 911, officers were able to
catch two women in the act of mailbox theft in the 9600 block of
50th SW. A detective found 50 to 100 pieces of mail in the women's
vehicle, from at least 15 different victims. He also found
handbags, checks, jewelry, and narcotics. The two women were booked
into King County Jail for invetigation of theft.
In another case of a caring person making a difference, officers
received a call to check on the welfare of a woman in the Genesee
neighborhood. She was reportedly shouting and throwing things
around. The caller also noted that the woman had a hunting rifle at
the home. When officers arrived, they heard the woman yelling (as
they later discovered) at someone who was not there. The heat was
shut off, broken glass littered the floors, and non-edible food was
on the stovetop. The woman said that people had been trying to come
and go from the house. The officers found hundred of letters making
reference to the pain in her body. The voluntarily gave up her
weapon, which was under the bed, and was transported to Harborview.
As she walked on 34th SW one evening, a woman heard footsteps
running behind her. A man covered her mouth with his hand, told her
to be quiet, forced her to the ground, and stole a necklace, a cell
phone, and $25.
A Yellow Cab driver was robbed at gunpoint when he dropped off an
Asian male and four Asian females near 31st and Juneau early Saturday.
Late one evening while walking his dog in the 2600 block of 47th
SW, a citizen noticed a man at the side of a neighbor's home,
peering into the bedroom window. When he confronted the man, the
stranger left southbound on foot.
Near South Park, a business owner became concerned when she saw one of the regular homeless people white-faced and unresponsive in an
outdoor alcove where he often slept. Medics confirmed that the man,
who had lived on the streets in the area for the last 27 years, was
dead. There were no signs of violence. The man's wallet contained
$42. The medical examiner took responsibility for the body of the
man, who remains nameless at this time.
Unknown persons ripped a real-estate lock box from the front of an
Alki building and stole the keys inside.
An Alki area resident reports that for the third time since
December someone threw a large rock through his car windshield.
On a recent afternoon, someone broke into a car parked on SW
Edmunds near Camp Long and stole a number of credit cards and a
checkbook.
Though a local woman admits that her parking skills need
improvement, she was surprised when she went to get in her car last
Saturday morning. Someone had covered her vehicle with cigarette
butts and garbage. They had also "egged" the car and left a note
behind, reading, "You are eggstremely rude in your parking."
