Shots ring out near precinct
Mon, 07/03/2006
Officers heard shots fired near the Southwest Precinct late Monday and saw a large group of people scattering from the apartments a half block away at the corner of 24th and Webster. Officers recognized one man who had previously threatened people with a gun, so they placed him in handcuffs as a precaution as they continued their investigation. A crowd of 15 people grew and shouted "angrily" at the officers as the handcuffed men incited the crowd. To calm the situation, the man was taken to the precinct for questioning, where he started to cry, claimed to be woozy, stated he had been thrown around during the half-block journey and said that he wanted to go to the hospital because it was "his right." Medics examined him and said he did not need medical attention. After questioning he was told he was free to go. He immediately stopped crying, and as he was escorted from the precinct he demanded the officer's IDs (which they provided) and began to yell. His mother and another bystander, both of whom had hassled officers during the original handcuffing, approached and began screaming, and the young man lay down on the pavement. Once again, medics stopped to see if he needed assistance, but they were distracted when the screaming male bystander ripped off his shirt, clenched his fists and flexed his arms in a fighting stance. The shirtless man then turned away from the officers, grabbed an item from his waistband, whirled around and pointed it before dropping it. (It turned out to be a cell phone.) He was immediately taken to the ground and arrested. He was booked into King County Jail for investigation of obstruction, just as he had been after an incident in May in the 7500 block of 24th SW.
A Junction resident didn't appreciate a young drunk female using her apartment alley as a urinal. When she told the weak-bladdered woman to knock it off, she got a punch in the eye.
Late Monday, officers responded to South Park on a shots-fired call. At 12th and Donovan they found a man lying against a curb, shot in the head. He was deceased. Several shell casings were found nearby. The homicide unit has taken over the case.
In South Park, an officer saw a known prostitute hanging out in the parking lot of a convenience store. Although she is allowed to shop at the store, she is prohibited, by a trespass order, from loitering in the vicinity. When he approached her, she pooh-poohed the matter, and said confidently, "You're cool. You won't take me to jail for trespassing." But she was mistaken, and as the officer arrested her she promptly informed him that she had changed her mind about the quality of his character.
Officers dispatched to a domestic disturbance on Delridge ended up arresting the man on an outstanding $10,000 drunk-driving warrant and arresting the woman for possession of the five bags of marijuana sitting in plain view on the coffee table.
While walking near the 28th and Elmgrove, a 13-year-old girl was jumped by two older teen females. She was punched in the face, and the suspects stole her backpack, shoes and necklace.
On 35th SW, a man entered his apartment building's sauna and was startled to see that someone had placed a BBQ propane tank on the floor, right next to the sauna's heating unit. He removed it and knows of no reason why anyone would do this.
An Olympia woman was driving down Alki SW on Saturday when a group of men shoved another man against the side of her car. They used enough force that it dented the car and prevented her from opening her passenger door. The suspects are at large.
In North Admiral, a woman called 911 after she discovered that her 14-year-old son had ingested an unknown number of her oxycodone painkiller tablets. The boy was transported to Harborview by medics.
