I read "SeaTac, Tukwila receive a poor healthy checkup" in the Times/News on June 20 with great interest.
The Highline YMCA has been concerned about the growing obesity crisis in our community and has partnered with Children's Hospital to provide an intensive 12-week program for inactive children, ages 8-12, called, "Strong Kids."
The program consists of twice-weekly 90-minute sessions followed by six months of follow-up and coaching. Family involvement is required.
Sessions involve the whole family in physical activity, parent discussion groups, physical activity for youth, as well as nutrition and self-empowerment.
As a result of generous funding by the Burien/White Center and SeaTac Rotary, along with funding being secured by King County Councilwoman Julia Patterson, the "Strong Kids" program is addressing childhood obesity.
In addition, the Highline YMCA provides the "healthy indoor environment" Kreiger recommended for improving the health of our community members.
The Highline YMCA does offer financial assistance for membership to those who qualify through the funds raised by our annual Partners with Youth Campaign.
I commend the Times/News for publishing the report. The health crisis in our community does not begin and end at the door of those living in poverty. The health crisis affects everyone in our community and the YMCA is one of many community partners committed to addressing the health needs of our community.
