Rams score big against Evergreen

KENT - Local knowledge and comfort in ideal weather added up to Seamount League home course victories for Mount Rainier against Evergreen Thursday at the Riverbend golf course.
Against an undermanned, but hard-working Wolverine squad, the Rams shot to a 117-29 win in girls action and a 64-11 victory in boys play.
After 10 days of playing on visiting courses, the Mount Rainier scoring showed that there's no place like home.
"They were just relaxed," said Ram head coach Lance Hepworth about his charges. "The girls score was just three points less than the season high. The boys score was good and proves that it feels good to be home."
For the undefeated Mount Rainier girls (9-0), junior Stephanie Corey led with a medalist winning 6 over par 42 and 30 points despite shooting a score that was not typical of her high-powered game.
"I wasn't putting the way I wanted to," she said. "They punched the greens this week, and any shorter putts kicked in the pits. I like the smoother grain of the greens in normal condition. I'm still looking to improve my game and play against the high level competition at district."
Mount Rainier's Becky Pham was five strokes back with a 47 while notching 25 points. Kelsey Berg finished her round at 50 for 22 points. Coming in with a 52 and 21 points was Catherine Tart. Becky Pham and Julie Soderlund closed with 53's as Pham notched 19 points with Soderlund adding 18.
As Evergreen's only girls player, Rachel Fullington just missed medalist honors as she posted a steady 43 and 29 points.
"I've been the only girl for three years and I'm used to it," declared Fullington."I would like having more girls, but I like to play golf anyway. Today, I played the best golf I've played in awhile. I'm happy with my woods and irons."
Adding support to her efforts is the watchfulness of her mother, Evergreen head coach Laurel Fullington.
Philip Horton led the winning Mount Rainier boys' effort in a medalist-winning performance of 2-over par 38 and 16 points.
"All my shots were going where I wanted them to," Horton said. "The driver was good and I hit some good power drives."
On the 326-yard par 4 first hole, Horton began by using a sand wedge from 90 yards out on his second shot and lobbing the ball close to the hole.
Faced with a straight-in, slightly downhill putt, Horton proceeded to drain the 7-footer for a birdie.
Adam Caudillo finished one stroke behind Horton with a 39 and scored 14 points. Two strokes behind Caudillo came Rex Fugere, who shot to 13 points.
David Waingro carded a 42 and 11 points as Sean Towe came home 44 and 10 points. Landon Lindblad closed the Ram effort with a 47 and 10 points.
Evergreen's two-player team was paced by Jeff Barth's 47 and eight points.
"My shots were pretty consistent," declared Barth. "I got on the greens in two or three. There were a few iffy tee shots."
Highlighting Barth's day was the 174-yard, par 3 eight hole.
After two shots, he was still short of the green. Pulling out his and wedge, Barth saved par by chipping in from 30 yards.
"My short game was good," he continued. "I'm confident I can get to the second day of districts and go from there."
Wolverine teammate Austin Haus posted a 53 for 3 points.
Lauding the efforts of her teams, Evergreen coach Fullington also expressed the hope that more students at the school would take part in golf.
"Each of the players is working on personal goals and achieving them," she observed. I'm proud of them. I just wish more kids would take advantage of the fun and opportunities of golf. It opens opportunities socially and in business."
