I am writing to urge all registered voters to vote no on Initiative 933 in November.
Initiative 933 is a threat to our community and to any of us who own property in Washington state.
If I-933 is passed in November, you could soon find yourself living next door to incompatible development that lowers your property value. Development could take place in our communities' streams, wetlands, and landslide areas without adequate protection for these environmental systems and adjacent properties.
In addition, our emerging civic centers could be inundated with incompatible uses, development that doesn't adhere to height limits or design standards, doesn't provide for pedestrian and bicycle access or adequate landscaping.
In Initiative 933 passes, the only way to stop inappropriate and environmentally degrading development will be for us taxpayers to pony up billions of dollars (averaging $3,000 per household) to pay real estate speculators to adhere to existing laws.
Why is this? Upon passage of I-933, land use regulations that limit the value or use of an individual's property in any way must be waived, or else the government (read taxpayers) must pay the property owner for the loss of property value/use resulting from enforcement of regulation.
This "pay or waive" law would apply no matter how small the limitation of the regulation on the property or how great the public benefit of the regulation.
The Burien City Council passed a resolution supporting a NO vote on I-933. I wholeheartedly agree with their position on this potentially costly and damaging initiative and urge all registered voters to join me in voting NO on I-933.
