"I urge those with a strong interest in pedestrian issues and keeping Seattle a walkable city to consider this important position" said Nickels.
The board was established in 1993 and advises the mayor, City Council and departments on issues related to pedestrian safety and accessibility. These include policies and plans affecting the pedestrian environment, and ongoing input on projects throughout the city which could potentially change that pedestrian environment. It also provides input on annual decisions about budget priorities, and targets specific issues of interest to board members. Several positions will be available in March 2007.
The board seeks applicants from a variety of ages, walks of life and areas of the city of Seattle. Past and current members include professional designers and engineers, neighborhood activists, landscape architects, and people of various ages, ethnic backgrounds and levels of mobility who have an interest in pedestrian issues.
