To avoid mess, take a train, bus

Sound Transit will add another Sounder commuter train, which will include service to Tukwila, during the three-week closure of lanes on northbound Interstate 5 that begins Friday, Aug. 10.
The extra train will run from Puyallup Station to Seattle's King Street Station each weekday morning beginning August 13. It will depart Puyallup at 6:17 a.m. and stop in Sumner, Auburn, Kent and Tukwila before arriving in Seattle at 7:10 a.m.
In the evening, it will depart Seattle at 4:50 p.m. and serve all of those stations before returning to Puyallup Station at 5:33 p.m.
One other Sounder train schedule will be adjusted beginning August 13 to accommodate the extra round trip.
The 1503 will depart King Street Station at 4:40 pm instead of 4:45 pm, and arrive at Tukwila, Kent, Auburn, Sumner, Puyallup, and Tacoma five minutes ahead of it's normal schedule.
Regular commuter rail fares will apply to all five roundtrip Sounder trains.
Sound Transit's Express bus service will also see some temporary changes.
One regular Sounder train schedule will be adjusted beginning August 13 to accommodate the additional service.
Metro also offers several many ways to deal with the I-5 lane closures. But, said Harold Taniguchi, director of the King County Department of Transportation, "While we believe transit will be a preferred option for many commuters, we anticipate bus service and schedules will be disrupted during the I-5 project,
"We also expect standing-room-only on many buses headed north during the morning commute. We are encouraging our passengers to be patient, flexible and have a back-up plan for their daily trips."
Work will continue around the clock for 19 consecutive days with multiple lanes and ramps closed at all times.
This closure will dramatically affect traffic in the greater-Seattle area, and WSDOT is asking drivers to make plans so they can get around without getting stuck in extensive traffic backups.
WSDOT has been working to reduce the number of vehicles on northbound I-5 just south of downtown by more than 50 percent to help prevent gridlock.
Traffic engineers expect severe congestion on I-5 from 4 a.m. to midnight every day and, unless drivers help by using alternative plans, backups could extend from downtown Seattle to Tacoma.
During the closure, crews will break apart and remove 34 failing expansion joints that link the concrete bridge slabs that comprise this 40-year-old freeway section.
If these expansion joints completely failed, large pieces of metal and three-foot-long bolts would pop up from the freeway deck and lead to potentially deadly collisions.
Crews will also pave northbound I-5 between Spokane Street and I-90.
WSDOT is asking drivers to look at bus and Sounder train schedules and vanpool options, talk to employers about teleworking one or more days a week, flexing work schedules and commuting very early or late.
