Low-income disabled persons can now seek a rebate on their utility taxes thanks to a change in the City of Federal Way's Utility Tax Rebate Program.

Low-income seniors have qualified for the program since its inception in 2003.

The rebate program, which helped about 50 seniors last year, covers the city utility tax on gas, electricity, telephone, cell phones, pagers, garbage/recycling, and cable TV charges. Taxes on wastewater/water charges are not eligible.

Requirements

Low-income seniors must be 65 or older and live within city limits.

The maximum income set by the federal government for a one-person household is $27,250 and for a two-person household is $31,150.

Required documents include a tax return or bank statements, and the original utility bills.

For the low-income disabled, disability status for all or part of 2007 must be established by providing one of the following: proof of Social Security disability income, proof of supplemental security income or a physician's disability certificate.

Residents who qualify must live within city limits. Other required documents include a tax return or bank statements, and the original utility bills. Income requirements are the same as the senior category.
