I read with interest your article on Rep. Sharon Nelson and the work she is doing to protect Maury Island from mining by Glacier Northwest. Very few people know about the mining on Maury Island so it sounds like she is dong a noble thing.
She says that she has fought the mine since she moved there 14 years ago. Glacier has been mining there for over 40 years. Sounds to me like she is a NIMBY. I am tired of people who move next to a mine or an airport and get their land cheap and then work to have the mine or the airport closed.
Glacier has been under close scrutiny since they applied to build a larger dock and every government agency has approved their plans. Still Rep. Nelson and a handful of Maury Island people continue to sue to try and stop it.
If you think this does not affect you then you are sadly mistaken. There is an abundant supply of sand and gravel on that island to for the whole region, yet because of a handful of people Glacier and other suppliers must import sand and gravel from Canada. How much might we have saved on the third runway if concrete was much cheaper?
It's nice Rep. Nelson is fighting such a noble cause. I would believe her so much more if she did not live there.
