Parties to caucus on Feb. 9
Sun, 01/27/2008
Four days after "Super Tuesday," when 24 states hold presidential primary elections, Washington Democrats and Republicans will have the chance to make their voices heard.
Members of both parties will meet on Saturday, Feb. 9, to discuss issues and elect delegates who will help choose the 2008 presidential nominees.
Voters must attend their precinct caucuses to participate. Caucuses for both parties begin at 1 p.m., with registration beginning around 12 p.m.
State Democrats will base all of their delegate selection on the results of the party's caucuses.
Republicans will choose 49 percent of their delegates at the caucuses, with the other 51 percent selected in the Washington presidential primary election on Tuesday, Feb. 19.
"Democracy is not a spectator sport," Ivan Weiss of Vashon Island, chairman of the 34th District Democrats, said about the party caucuses. "Participation in the political process is what build this nation."
"Precinct caucuses do not cost one penny of your taxes," Weiss continued. "They are financed by contributions from individual party members and staffed by volunteers."
Caucuses are for the members of each political party to determine who their nominees are, he said. Democratic Party precinct caucuses "are open to anyone who declares themselves a Democrat."

"I invite all Republicans to attend" their party's caucuses," said Don Riecks of Des Moines, chairman of the 33rd District Republicans.
"People take it for granted that everything begins at the grass roots level. I'm welcoming anyone who wants to help get out Republican votes this year."
Riecks said Republicans from all precincts in the 33rd Legislative District will caucus at Kent-Meridian High School, 10021 S.E. 256th St. in Kent.
On the opposite side of the political aisle, Tina Shamseldin of Normandy Park, chairwoman of the 33rd District Democrats, said, "The Democratic caucuses are an important event to help us take back your country, so please come join your fellow Democrats and make your voice heard."
Democrats in the 33rd District will caucus at 10 locations in Normandy Park, Des Moines, SeaTac and Kent. Caucus locations are listed at www.33rddems.org.
"We anticipate a great turnout and expect to have a fun, well-organized and lively meeting," Shamseldin added.
"This is where the process all begins and we look forward to beginning that process and finding out the preferences of the grassroots of the Republican Party," said Jim Clingan of Burien, chairman of the 34th District Republicans.
"And we look forward to a spirited race, no matter who the nominees are.
