Anthony's HomePort at Shilshole Bay restaurant has announced the cancellation of its 19th annual Oyster Games, which had been scheduled for March 25. The popular event raises money for the Puget Soundkeeper Alliance, an environmental organization to protect the Sound.
Formerly known as the Anthony's Oyster Olympics, the event has always been held the last Tuesday of March. This year, however, Easter arrives early, on March 23. The last time the moveable feast moved up this early was in 1913, and after this year, it will not again until the year 2160.
Two of Anthony's busiest days so close together would be too burdensome for the staff.
Spokesperson, Lane Hoss, explained, "Easter is usually in April. We are so busy with family brunch and dinner on that holiday, and even borrow staff from our other restaurants," she said. Other restaurants include Chinooks at Salmon Bay, at Fisherman's Warf, and Anthony's Pier 66 and Bell Street Diner.
While the Oyster Games are on hiatus, "We plan to continue helping the Puget Soundkeeper Alliance," said Hoss. "You've got to have clean water for good oysters."
Next year Easter falls on April 12, plenty of time to allow for the games to begin.
