TACOMA-Dalesky and Black Gymnasium at Henry Foss High School turned into a graveyard of dreams for Foster High School of Tukwila in a 47-35 loss to Olympic League champion Port Townsend in 2008 West Central District 2A boys championship game action Thursday.
Port Townsend (21-1) earned the No. 1 seed to the state tournament, which begins today at the Tacoma Dome.
Foster (13-10) met Steilacoom for the fourth time this season Saturday (after press time) in a bid for the No. 2 district seed to state.
"In the second half, they (the Redskins) did a better job and played with more intensity," responded Bulldog head coach John Barbee.
Continually caged by turnovers, mounting foul trouble and inconsistent shooting, the Bulldogs were still deadlocked with the Redskins 29-29 following a short pull up jump shot by Bradley Jenkins and Darius Page's turnaround bank shot with 1:54 remaining in the third quarter.
Parker McClelland guided a 5-0 scoring surge for Port Townsend. Leading 34-29 after three quarters, the Redskins went on the warpath, continuing to keep the Bulldogs scampering behind them.
Port Townsend cashed in on free throws and short range goals, extending its advantage to a game high 23 point lead at the conclusion.
A pair of three-point goals by Elan Solvik keyed the Redskins to a 13-7 first quarter lead.
Five-foot, seven-inch Refugio Soto-Lopez and Bradley Jenkins later led a 12-3 Foster scoring blitz in the second quarter to give the Bulldogs a 23-20 halftime edge.
Then the Bulldogs began falling into the turnover trap again. Only Darius Page's basket after emerging from a floor scramble interrupted 4-0 and 5-0 Redskin scoring runs, as Port Townsend assumed a 29-25 margin at the 4:59 mark of the third quarter to set the stage for Foster's final fling into contention.
The Bulldogs also dealt with a plethora of fouls that eventually disqualified Jamal Johnson and Page near the end of the game.
Lightning quick Soto-Lopez, who scored 32 points in the semifinal win, was having a good game until he injured an ankle and suffered a bruised trachea 1:45 into the second half.
Although he returned to the game early in the fourth quarter, he played sparingly in a hobbling mode and his status for Saturday's game was unknown at press time.
"It was our turnovers," lamented Barbee. "They made us pay for our turnovers. They got to the penalty quickly in the second half and we never got into the penalty situation."
For Foster, Soto-Lopez scored 11 points - nine in the first half - while Reuben Donaldson notched eight points.
McClelland of Port Townsend led all scorers with 15. Solvik added 13 points.
