Fresh-off-the-vine produce, lush flowers and handcrafted goods are coming to Olde Burien Thursday, May 8.
That's when the Burien Farmers Market opens for the season with live music on 10th Avenue Southwest between Southwest 151st Street and Southwest 152nd Street.
Des Moines will begin its farmers market on Saturday, June 7. It will be on Saturdays from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the Des Moines Marina through Oct. 25.
SeaTac will hold a farmers market for the first time, beginning Sunday, June 15. SeaTac's market will be at Angle Lake Park each Sunday from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m., ending on Sept. 14.
Debra George of Marketing Innovations, which coordinates the Burien market on behalf of the Discover Burien Association, said the expanding construction of Burien Town Square required the move from last year's location near the former Bartell Drugs building.
Discover Burien's steering committee voted to make Olde Burien the market's new site.
Expect to find a bounty of fresh food, including organically grown produce and freshly baked items.
"While many of our fruits and vegetables are just picked to ensure the best quality and flavor, buying directly from the farmer makes it quite affordable," George said.
The market will have patio tables for eating lunch or a snack. Market-goers can grab a hot dog from the market's cart, add a juicy piece of fruit from a market vendor and relax to live tunes performed most days.
The market's handcrafted items are a windfall for shoppers in need of a gift - for themselves or others. From one-of-a-kind jewelry to handmade cedar benches, the market has options to suit any taste.
For market devotees who grew attached to a favorite farm or craftsperson last year, a majority of this season's vendors are returnees, according to George.
Discover Burien is a nonprofit organization that works on the economic development, promotion and marketing of the city.
Sponsored by Discover Burien and Prudential Northwest Realty Associates, LLC, the market operates every Thursday from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. through Oct. 9.
