A very serious accident just occurred on our street (SW 130th heading into Shorewood) about 10:15 p.m.
There were seven police cars, two ambulances and one fire truck. One King County officer guessed that the speed must have been in excess of 65 mph and the car rolled about four times.
This was a young driver, perhaps 17, and allegedly under the influence of either alcohol, drugs or both. This is a child of a Shorewood homeowner. His mother came to the accident and provided no explanation for his behavior. She herself has been witnessed driving too fast through the neighborhood.
We are very lucky that the driver did not die and that no neighbors were hurt or property damaged-- this time. Several police at the accident said there's little they can do with existing resources.
That's not good enough. Should we wait till something more serious happens?
Ten minutes after this accident was cleared and neighbors were talking, another young driver was driving very fast coming out of Shorewood- 35+ mph in a 20 mph corner. Neighbors started yelling for him to slow down and it's lucky he didn't hit cars or people on the street.
A few months ago, another driver made a 180-degree turn directly in front of our house after losing control of his vehicle and tearing up the lawn of my neighbor. Luckily, no one was hurt and the driver sped away without being identified. Police were called. Nothing happened.
Last year a motorcycle missed the corner at the bottom of our street and crashed. Police estimated the speed in excess of 60 mph. As far as we know the driver was not cited.
Within the last year, another car ended up in the ditch as you pass the Shorewood sign -- the same driver as the motorcycle accident above. Nothing happened.
Every week and especially weekends, kids in cars and motorcycles drive extremely fast through the corners heading into and out of Shorewood.
Tires are squealing on a regular basis, neighbors are fearful of pulling out of their driveway or walking along the road.
This speeding has been going on too long and too many accidents have occurred. The City of Burien has all but ignored this for years even after petitioning and regular contact.
What is the City going to do about speeding on our street and through our neighborhood?!!!

P.S. I should let you know that the City has followed up and suggested we meet to discuss the issues. That meeting occurred last Wednesday and the City was quite responsive.
