National ends Auburn domination

AUBURN - Markus Montelongo masterfully marshaled up a lights out pitching gem, muffling Kent batters on a brilliant, six-inning complete game one-hitter with 13 strike outs to guide the Federal Way National All Stars to a title on Saturday, June 28, at the South King County Ball Fields.
Artistically painting a perfect performance for four innings, the National ace struck out out five consecutive batters in one stretch while guiding unbeaten Federal Way past Kent, 5-0, in a championship round game of the 2008 Washington State District 10 Little League baseball 10-11 age tournament, ending a seven-year stranglehold of this tournament by Auburn and Kent teams.
Montelongo's lone lapse in control transpired in the fifth inning when he walked the leadoff batter and hit the next batter. Resolutely bearing down on business, the National mound master fanned the next three hitters before yielding a one-out double to Darold Thach in the sixth en route to the shut out and the district championship.
"I was going on the outside corner with the curve and the change up," recalled a confident Montelongo. "Then I gave 'em the heater!"
First inning FWN offense created more than enough runs for the fireballing right hander.
Lawyer Braun led off with a ringing double. Two outs later, Garrett Westberg lofted a pop fly that dropped untouched to the infield dirt for a run-scoring single. Scotty Sunitsch followed by hammering a stand up double for the second run. Concluding the inning's scoring was a double off the bat of Max Dalrymple.
Run-scoring singles by Montelongo and Sunitsch in the fifth completed the game's scoring.
"I'm happy because no one has done it before - beating Kent or Auburn for the championship," beamed Dalrymple. "I'm proud to be on the team that beat the defending champions."
Another Federal Way National player summed up his feelings.
"It's just that we're doing so well," stated Sunitsch. "The coaching has helped a lot. I'm looking forward to state and doing well at state. Markus pitched an amazing game."
Batting 3-for-3 with a double and two RBI, Sunitsch led the National attack. Braun batted 2-for-3 with a double.
Federal Way National's pilgrimmage to the state berth began with a 12-0 whitewashing of Fife/Milton/Edgewood before a 5-4 edging out of Kent. FWN destroyed Auburn, 17-5, to gain Saturday's championship game as the undefeated team.
Cruising into the state tournament, National manager Tim Robbins recalled the traits that keyed his team's district tournament success and will work well at state.
"The kids get along real well," he said. "All the players had significant roles. This is a well rounded team that hits well and has good defense. Today, we knew we had our No.1 (Montelongo) and No. 2 (Westberg) pitchers available. We have six or seven kids that can pitch well."
Federal Way National begins the state tournament hosted by District 10 and the Auburn Little League on Sunday, July 20, at Sunset Park in the Lakeland area of Auburn. The 6 p.m. engagement will be against the winner of the District 5-District 12 pairing.
Players for the District 10 champion Federal Way Nationals are Lawyer Braun, Taylor 'TJ' Davis, Markus Montelongo, Garrett Westberg, Zachary Nunez, Max Dalrymple, Jon Charbonneau, Dax Wallat, Christian Stafford, Scotty Sunitsch, Donavan Castro, Justyn Ekness and Brandon Henderson.
Manager Robbins is assisted by coaches Marcus Hudson and Tomas Montelongo. Brian Westberg is the charter president.
