The Southwest Healthy Youth Partnership wants parents to help combat the use of alcohol in middle school students.
As part of a multi-pronged campaign, the coalition will begin distributing a voluntary "Alcohol and Drug Free Homes Parent Pledge" to parents of Madison Middle School students.
"By signing the pledge, parents let others in the community know that they intend to supervise and monitor their child's social activities," said Renae T. Gaines, coalition coordinator.
"It also begins to create a network in our community of parents who can help each other stem the tide on this growing problem," added Gaines. "The time for prevention is now, before our children reach the high school years."
Among other activities, the coalition is working to support parents and guardians in creating and sustaining a safe and healthy home and community for their children through Guiding Good Choices parenting workshops; an awareness campaign "Parents Who Host Lose The Most" and "Reward and Remind" to acknowledge our convenience stores not violating the sale of alcohol beverages to minors.
West Seattle Community members are encouraged to volunteer and to obtain more information. The next coalition meetings is Nov. 25 at 6 p.m. at the Southwest Library, 9010 35th Ave. S.W.
